Has Atlus Made Non-Shin Megami Tensei Games?

When you think of Atlus, the first games that come to mind are likely the Persona ones. Maybe you’re more of a Shin Megami Tensei fan? Ah, there’s Catherine too, the oddity in the mix that isn’t part of Megami Tensei at all. And now there’s Metaphor, something with a brand-new visual identity.

How Many Shin Megami Tensei Games Are There?

With plenty of mainline games and almost innumerable spin-offs, here’s every game in the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Atlus may be best know for the Megami Tensei as series, but it’s made so much more than that. And actually, its made a shocking number of games in general considering its size. The Megami Tensei is big enough, but let’s see just how many games Atlus has made altogether.

How Many Non-Megami Tensei Games Has Atlus Made?

Metaphor is spearheading Atlus towards differentiating its style, letting it diverge from the games it has become so well-known now. But before Megami Tensei, and Persona especially, were Atlus’ biggest series, it made countless other games. So, so many.

Because Atlus doubles as a publisher, it’s hard to get an exact count on just how many games they’ve made in total, especially since they also don’t make every Megami Tensei game either. Though if you were to roughly deduce it, it would be somewhere around 70, give or take a few.

Metaphor is obviously the highlight of Atlus’ non-Megami Tensei games at the moment, though games like Catherine, Etrian Odyssey, and the hospital-drama Trauma Center games. Plus copious one-off games, many of which were never released internationally.

Humourously, one of Atlus’ earliest games was Friday The 13th for the NES, classed as one of the most difficult horror games ever made.

How Many Games Has Atlus Made In Total?

Atlus has made a lot of games. Even though plenty of those games fall outside of the Megami Tensei umbrella, the vast majority still owe themselves to that series. They’re so well known for the Megami Tensei games because they have truly made a staggering number of them.

Taking into account every single game they’ve made, including the entirety of the Megami Tensei series, that number of around 70 balloons up to 180. Again. give or take a few here as Atlus’ publishing efforts mix with their own Megami Tensei games quite a bit. Regardless though, it’s a staggeringly high number of games. Considering they started back in 1987, that’s around 5 games a year, every year.

Considering the amount added with the various re-releases they create, they have been included in this numbering.

How Many Multi-Entry Series Does Atlus Have?

As you’ve seen by now, Atlus has made quite a few games, though plenty of them, especially its earlier games, were one-off games or licensed titles. Created, released, and never seen from again. Megami Tensei and its spin-off meantthey always had something profitable to return to.

That said, some of those other series have stuck, leading to multiple sequels and remakes that built upon their predecessors. Let’s take a look at the most prominent.

Series

Number Of Entries

Shin Megami Tensei

96

Persona

28

Etrian Odyssey

10

Trauma Center

5

It’s funny seeing just how much Shin Megami Tensei dwarfs every other series. Even funnier is that Persona is itself a spin-off of the greater series, and still has plenty more entries than any other series Atlus has made.

For the most part, that is it. Certain games, such as Radiant Historia, got later remakes, but no brand-new entries that could class them as an independent series. That’s not a bad thing either, mind you. Seeing Atlus experiment with brand-new games rather than just relying on the past is a sign it’s willing to do more than what it’s used to.
