Solas spent a lot of time in the Dread Wolf’s Crossroads before the start of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Thanks to the nature of the Fade, the place is full of his memories and regrets, a fact you can use to your benefit.
As you explore the Crossroads, you may come across locations tucked away in corners or hidden behind blight gates. Five of them hide wolf statuettes, separate from the ones you find for Fen’Harel Altars. You may not know what to do with them at first, but these statuettes are eventually the key to an important prize in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

How to Start Regrets of the Dread Wolf
This quest will appear in your quest log as soon as you complete one of the five Crossroads quests that end with you getting a wolf statuette. However, you can’t properly start this quest until you meet with Morrigan (and the Inquisitor) during the story quest “Shades of the Blight.” During the conversation, the Inquisitor gives Rook a statuette, and suggests that you look for more.
When you return to the Lighthouse, you can place the statuette on a stand behind the central staircase. This reveals a mural, along with the voice of Solas reenacting one of his main regrets. After a team discussion, you can place any other statuettes you find on other stands in the central chamber. You don’t have to complete the Crossroads quests in any order, but you do have to place the statuettes in a specific order. The quests are:
A team discussion follows every scene, and your responses can increase or decrease your companions’ approval scores. After the sixth and final regret, the Caretaker will appear and suggest that you speak to someone in the Crossroads. That someone is Morrigan, who knows more than you might expect about Solas and Mythal. She’ll then open the way for you to reach Mythal’s area, the Nest of the Ancients.

How to Convince Mythal
Mythal is straight ahead in the new area, but don’t forget to pick up the Codex item to the right and the Memento to the left before speaking to her.
A conversation will start once you get close enough to Mythal, and you can choose to either convince her to help you willingly, or fight her dragon form and take her essence by force. Overall, convincing Mythal gives you the generally better result. Fighting Mythal gives you a different set of rewards, but what you get for convincing her is better.
To convince Mythal, you need to successfully defend three out of four arguments. You can choose them in any order, but you can only choose the wrong defense for your third argument. If you make a bad choice for your first, second, or fourth defense, she’ll turn into a dragon and fight you. Here are your options, and the proper defenses:
- We must stop the blight.
- We must stop the gods.
- We are worthy.
- Solas is helping me.
Your rewards for succeeding include:
After the discussion, check behind the pillar to the right for another Memento, then drop into the arena. Turn right and go through the archway to pick up a third Memento, then climb the ladder. This leads to a Timelost Hoards chest with a unique amulet inside, plus there’s a note on the ground which provides some background on the area.

How to Fight Mythal’s Retribution
If you fail to convince Mythal, or if you choose to fight her, she’ll turn into the purple dragon Flemeth once became back in Dragon Age: Origins. Of course, the combat mechanics are much different compared to what they were back in the first Dragon Age game.
Mythal’s Retribution is a level 45 dragon that has an electrical breath weapon. She’s vulnerable to necrotic damage, but resists electricity. She shares a lot of her attacks and combat mechanics with other electrical high dragons:
- She can attack with any leg, any wing, her tail, or her head while at close range.
- She can charge forward and tackle forward.
- She can leap up and crash down, dealing area damage around her landing site.
- She can shoot one lightning bolt at an enemy while on the ground, or three in a row while hovering in the air. Don’t stop running if you see an electric circle around your character’s feet.
- During the fight, her head or two of her legs will start glowing. While they glow, you can hit these points for extra damage.
- Instead of a normal Takedown, high dragons who fill their Stagger bar will fall over, and their stomach will become a weak spot. Hit it as hard as you can to deal significant damage.
When you take her down to two-thirds of her health, Mythal will fly up to a perch, fire three lightning bolts at Rook, and then summon reinforcements. These reinforcements are a trio of special Sentinels that can target any location on the battlefield with an area attack, and they explode if you get too close to them. Your best bet for getting rid of them is to run up to bait their self-destruct, then dodge away.
During the second phase, Mythal gets access to her proper breath weapon attack, which she can sweep from side to side or straight forward.
The third phase begins when Mythal’s health drops to one-third. She fires another set of lightning bolts from her perch, then summons six Sentinels all around the outside edge of the arena. And unlike the first set, these Sentinels won’t move from their positions, so you’ll have to run all around the arena to get rid of them. Doing so is worth getting rid of the distraction, but make sure you keep one eye on Mythal as you go.
During the third phase, Mythal gets access to one final attack: a four-hit wing rush that can hit you hard if you don’t time your dodges right.
Your reward for beating Mythal the hard way includes:
- 1,000 XP
- The Dragon Scales valuable item
- Dragonfire Catalyst, a legendary material
- Etheric remnants
- +300 Lords of Fortune Strength
- A weaker Mythal essence
The Timelost Hoards reward and the mementos are the same either way.
