Oshi no Ko Illustrator Reveals A Shocking Truth About Her Next

Key Takeaways

  • Author Mengo Yokoyari doesn’t have plans for a new serialization after finishing Oshi no Ko.
  • Fans were upset with Oshi no Ko’s ending, but Yokoyari’s focus was on completing the series.
  • Confirming a one-shot titled Ai Bakka, Yokoyari likely put off new projects to finish Oshi no Ko.

Oshi no Ko co-author and illustrator Mengo Yokoyari recently talked about her next works. After the last Oshi no Ko chapter dropped, fans expressed frustration with the series ending. They were expecting a different development, and some even started asking creator Aka Akasaka to take a break before their next series, which is already slated for 2025.

Just like Akasaka, Mengo is also busy, with a new work confirmed for next year. In her case, it’s only a one-shot story titled Ai Bakka. Now that the final chapter was released, fans were waiting for news about Ai Bakka and possible new serializations. Her latest social media posts address the issue, but maybe not in the expected way.

Oshi no Ko begins with a boom, and its storyline is comparable to these series.

Oshi no Ko Took All of Mengo’s Attention

And she likely needs to rest for a while

Yesterday, she posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she stil doesn’t have many plans for her next serializations, because she gave her best to finish Oshi no Ko. This is what she said:

As I wanted to put all my strength into finishing it, I have no plans for a new serialization so far. Even if someone tried to propose anything to me, I would just leave it aside. lol

It’s a brand-new start!

I’m excited, but I’ll do my best to relax for some time.

(I haven’t finished many things yet 🤤)

(I’ve finished working on the volume!)

For those who like to check, here’s the original tweet:

Since she explicitly mentions a serialization, she is probably not talking about Ai Bakka. But the one-shot could be one of those “unfinished things” she put off to focus on Oshi no Ko. Anyway, she probably deserves a break after four years focusing mainly on one single series.

Oshi no Ko ran in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine from April 2020 to November 13, 2024. It is being adapted into anime, with plans for a third season recently revealed. Two live-action productions, a TV series followed by a movie, are scheduled to debut this year. The series will premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video, but the movie is not confirmed for international release yet.

The story starts when doctor Goro Amemiya has to secretly conduct famous idol Ai Hoshino’s delivery, of whom he is a big fan. As she is always in the spotlight, Hoshino decided to keep her pregnancy a secret. In a turn of events, Amemiya is killed by a Hoshino stalker, but luckily reincarnates as one of her children.

Hoshino gives birth to twins, a boy (Aqua) and a girl (Ruby), who is a former terminally-ill Amemiya patient reincarnated. Now the son of his favorite idol, Aqua will soon learn that the music industry is full of murder and revenge.
