Key Takeaways

  • A BioShock fan impresses with an accurate Big Daddy costume, crafted over two years.
  • The costume features glowing lights, a hand drill, and an oxygen cylinder.
  • With a BioShock sequel in development, fans are eager for more from the franchise.

One talented BioShock fan has built an impressively accurate Big Daddy costume, wowing fans of the FPS series. In the BioShock games, Big Daddies play a major role and appear throughout the first two mainline games in the franchise.

Back in 2007, the original BioShock game by 2K and Irrational Games came out to a roaring reception. It introduced players to a host of creepy enemies, including Big Daddies, which are also prominently featured on the cover art of the first two games. In BioShock‘s lore, these juggernauts are depicted as diving suit-wearing, genetically-enhanced bodyguards of another type of enemy called Little Sisters. The Big Daddies play a more central role in BioShock 2‘s story, where the protagonist is also a Big Daddy. Recently, a BioShock fan brought these metal-clad behemoths to life by dressing up as one.

After Judas, BioShock-Likes May Very Well Become the New Trendy Subgenre

If Ghost Story Games’ Judas ends up having as much impact on the gaming industry as it seems, BioShock-likes could become a trendy new subgenre.

On Reddit, user StalwartStud shared an eye-catching video of a realistic Big Daddy costume in action. The short clip shows the Big Daddy, equipped with the iconic diving suit, walking around, with lights glowing from inside the hole-covered helmet. Additionally, the costume also features the Big Daddy’s terrifyingly large hand drill, alongside an oxygen cylinder on the back. As expected, the highly accurate portrayal of the BioShock foe drew strong attention from other fans, who chipped in with praise as well as some interesting questions about the costume.

StalwartStud’s post generated a flurry of positive feedback directed towards the Big Daddy suit. One of the comments succinctly said, “I love it. It’s amazing.” Replying to several different users, the BioShock fan revealed more details about the costume, which admittedly took them two years of “working on and off” to complete. They shared that the Big Daddy suit, which was built out of foam, measured “over 7ft” and didn’t weigh too much. However, since the costume’s arms are long, their arms apparently get tired rather quickly while wearing it. They said that being inside the suit for a maximum of 10 minutes was close to their limit, confirming that it also gets hot inside. As far as visibility from inside the get-up is concerned, the view is “good enough” but limited to a small camera and a screen. StalwartStud also laid out their intention to incorporate a speaker into the costume to play relevant sounds on.

Since 2013’s BioShock Infinite, 2K hasn’t really touched the post-apocalyptic IP besides releasing a remastered compilation of the trilogy eight years ago. After over a decade of waiting, fans are understandably growing restless and eager to find out more about the next chapter in the franchise. With a BioShock sequel being in development at developer Cloud Chamber for quite a few years now, there are chances that fans may get an answer to some of their questions in the near future.
