Why Did Celestia Destroy Khaenri'ah In Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact may seem like a lighter game at first, yet the lore reveals, especially during the Chasm arc, take the story into a darker turn. The nations of Teyvat that seem friendly and the Abyss order, which is painted as villainous from the start of the story, apparently have much more than meets the eye, and it all started with Cataclysm that caused the destruction of the prestigious Kingdom of Khaenri’ah.

The events that happened 500 years ago in Genshin Impact had a significant impact on the history of Teyvat, and caused many casualties throughout the land. However, it’s suggested that the Khaenri’ahans suffered the most, from a destroyed homeland to being doomed to living their lives under a curse.

The Destruction Of Khaenri’ah

The Archon War was a time of great turbulence that led to the deaths of many people residing in Teyvat. During it, a battle among various gods took place to determine the seven Archons that currently rule Teyvat. However, there still stood a nation without a god, which was Khaenri’ah, as they weren’t the followers of Celestia.

Khaenri’ah made great progress in Science and Technology, to the point where they didn’t have to rely on a god. They also developed machinery like Ruin Guards, Ruin Serpents, Ruin Graders, and Ruin Hunters.

Some of them still wander around Teyvat, while many remain destroyed and covered with Foliage. These machines were originally created as weapons.

Khaenri’ah delved into what the game termed “The Forbidden Knowledge” and also developed “The Art of Khemia”, which were the major factors that led to the events of its destruction. The Art of Khemia allowed the unholy land to create living beings.

The Celestia wanted this blasphemous nation gone and sent the Archons of all nations to wage war upon it. About 500 years before Genshin Impact’s present day, The Cataclysm occurred.

This caused the destruction of Khaenri’ah and many lost their lives in Teyvat. Some Notable deaths include Ei Raiden’s sister Makoto Raiden, Durin, and Rukkhadevata.

Rhinedottir even managed to create complex beings using The Art of Khemia, like Albedo and Durin, and she was considered one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri’ah, who all made notable contributions to the Kingdom.

As the situation turned dire in Teyvat, Celestia decided to take matters into its own hands and caused the annihilation of the kingdom. All Khaenri’ah’s residents were inflicted with a curse.

The residents of Khaenri’ah were doomed to spend their lives under a curse. However, it affected the pure-blooded Khaenri’ahans differently, and instead, they became immortal, forced to wander in Tevyat for all eternity.

Despite being given eternal life, they have problems with their mental and physical form, which spring from the effects of Erosion.

Capitano reveals that he wears a mask because of his face being disintegrated. However, it’s still unclear how Dainsleif, who is another resident, managed to keep his body in good form, yet Dainsleif remarks about losing his memory.

The non-pure Khaenri’ahans were apparently turned into various monsters, that you might have encountered and defeated countless times, to get your ascension materials.

The Hilichurls, Abyss Mages, Abyss Heralds are all the former residents of the destroyed kingdom.

Your sibling, who was the heir to the throne in Khaenri’ah, is vengeful to the heavenly principles. They are the leader of the Abyss Order, who appear to be a villainous group recognized as the enemy of Teyvat.

In the Chapter Four Interlude, it’s suggested that their ambitions may not be as evil as first presented. They were the victims in the entire situation, and perhaps the actual villains are Celestia after all that the Traveler’s sibling wants to go against, but that will become clearer in the future updates in the storyline.
