The newly launched AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU hit the market last week and sold out within minutes. While Newegg and other retailers attribute this to high demand, scalpers clearly played a significant role, as the CPU has already appeared in the used market at outrageous prices. Although some retailers have hinted that the latest 3D V-Cache CPU might not be available until next year, gamers will have a second chance to snag the new best gaming CPU next week, particularly if they shop at Newegg.
Currently, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is sold out pretty much everywhere, including Newegg, and the AMD store. Gamers had only a few minutes to lock in the processor when sales went live. Even worse, scalpers invaded the sale, making securing the new gaming processor even more difficult. However, there’s still hope, as Newegg has confirmed they will restock the latest gaming CPU later this week or early next week (w/c November 18).
As far as we know, Newegg is the only the second retailer that will restock the 9800X3D in the coming days, after Amazon managed to get a few recently, though these are likely to be some of the last restocks of 2024. Other resellers, such as Overclockers, have already confirmed the CPU won’t hit the shelves until early 2025, as they’ve already allocated and sold out their 2024 shipments. If you’re planning an upgrade around the latest 3D V-Cache CPU, this might be the only chance to grab the CPU at MSRP price this year.
November 13:
Amazon
has quietly restocked the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It’s now available for $479 as stock lasts.
Unlike the Ryzen 9000 Series CPUs, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D launched to glowing reviews. It earned the Editor’s Choice and Best in Class awards from Tom’s Hardware and TechRadar. TechSpot‘s Steve Walton called it “The New Gaming CPU King” in his review. The second-generation 3D V-Cache chip delivered everything gamers expected and, unsurprisingly, was the only CPU to unseat the 7800X3D at the top of gaming CPU charts. With the growing demand and popularity, we expect even the upcoming restock to sell out just as quickly.
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the first X3D chip in the Ryzen 9000 series of CPUs, bringing an improved L3 cache compared to even the more expensive offerings. The CPU features 96MB L3 cache and a 120W TDP. There are eight cores and 16 threads with a boost clock speed of 5.2 GHz. The new CPU can deliver better 1% low performance in games for a more consistant experience.
Scalpers Have Already Listed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on eBay
A quick search on eBay reveals multiple listings for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with prices reaching as high as $1,000 for the highly sought-after gaming CPU. At the time of publishing, the lowest-priced listing on eBay stands at $620, significantly more expensive than the $479 MSRP. Just as with the Xbox Series X and PS5 launches, scalpers will capitalize on the high demand until supply stabilizes, which is likely sometime next year. If your CPU is due for an upgrade, we suggest you wait for upcoming restocks or check out other alternatives.
The previous Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the best alternative for the 9800X3D, and it’s currently available at Amazon for $476. If you’re looking for something more affordable, the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D is perfect for mid-range gaming builds, and you can even get 32GB of RAM for free when you purchase it from Newegg. Team Blue also offers excellent alternatives, such as the $236 Intel Core i5-14600K and the $439 Intel Core i9-14900K for high-end gaming builds.
