Key Takeaways
- Overwatch: Classic is out today, and fans both old and new are hyped.
- Some veterans, however, are warning everyone not to be blinded by nostalgia.
- Whether it’s a team of Symmetras laying down 36 turrets, or D.Va being utterly useless, we’re in for a wild ride with this temporary game mode.
Overwatch: Classic was unveiled yesterday, and it’s so much more than a return to 6v6. As well as giving everyone an extra teammate, it’s bringing the game back to its 2016 state entirely, which includes reverting all the hero reworks that have happened since then.
Mercy will be able to rez five teammates at once, Symmetra will be setting up six turrets around chokepoints, and Bastion will be camped out on the payload, tearing through anyone who gets close. While new players are going in with a sense of curiosity, eager to see how Overwatch used to play, longtime fans are already telling them to prepare themselves – it’s going to get messy.
Overwatch: Classic Is Almost Here, And Longtime Fans Are Bracing Themselves
Blizzard has given us a breakdown of how all of the heroes have been changed, but for those of us who have been there since 2016, it’s exactly what you’d expect. Little quirks we’d long forgotten about, like no hero limits, D.Va self-destructing herself, and Symmetra having two ultimates, are back with a vengeance, and it’s going to be interesting to see how everyone abuses these.
Just as she was at launch, Symmetra will be classified as a support hero. Keep that in mind when you’ve got 36 turrets draining your health.
Of course, there are quite a lot of Overwatch veterans who have been asking for an event like this, so they’re very happy to see Overwatch: Classic roll out today. It remains to be seen if we’re all a bit blinded by nostalgia though – there’s a reason so many changes have been made since 2016.
Overwatch: Classic will be available starting today and runs until December 2.
The sequel to Blizzard’s popular team-based hero shooter, Overwatch 2 features a roster of over 35 fighters and over 20 maps. It features team sizes reduced to five, aiming to create faster and more action-oriented matches, while PvE elements add to the options available.
