Baldur’s Gate 3 Has Sold Two Copies In Vatican City

Baldur's Gate 3 Has Sold Two Copies In Vatican City

Key Takeaways

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 is popular the world over, even in The Vatican.
  • Larian’s publishing director has revealed two copies of the game have been sold in Vatican City.
  • As for who in The Vatican has been playing the award-winning RPG, that’s up to your imagination.

To say Baldur’s Gate 3 is popular would be stating the obvious. Larian’s latest RPG has sold millions of copies the world over and many of those millions are still playing more than a year later – there are 40,000 of you playing right now on Steam alone. What will almost certainly be news to you is two of those millions of copies sold were bought in the Vatican.

While how many of you are playing on Steam at any given time is an easily discovered statistic, who’s playing where are deeper cuts that only those involved in the development and distribution of the game have access to. Thankfully, Michael Douse, Larian’s publishing director, not only has access to those numbers, but they have been sharing some of the more interesting stats, including Baldur’s Gate 3’s Vatican numbers.

I always told my Dream Guardian that they should always believe in their soul, that they’re indestructible.

Douse revealed that two copies of Baldur’s Gate 3 have been sold in The Vatican, and a third copy has been wishlisted. The publisher joked that they like to think the wishlist is on the Pope’s Steam account and he’ll get around to playing whenever he has some free time. You know how it feels when you get to the end of a long day and there’s no time left to kick back and play something for an hour or so? Well, imagine how often that happens when you’re the head of the Catholic Church.

Are You One Of The Two People Playing Baldur’s Gate 3 In The Vatican?

If You Are, Get In Touch, I Need To Know More

I was unaware of who exactly calls The Vatican home when I saw Douse’s tweet, so I did a little research to try and narrow down who exactly might be trying to fix Karlach’s infernal engine in one of the holiest places on Earth. Sure, one of them could be the Pope, but that seems unlikely. A lot of priests and nuns live there too, so could be them, or it could be a couple of the Swiss Guards who protect Catholicism’s capital.

The boring answer is the two people playing Baldur’s Gate 3 in Vatican City are probably the lay workers who make up the majority of the tiny nation’s population. There are more than 3,000 of them who call The Vatican home, and you’d have to think in any gathering of 3,000 people, in The Vatican or otherwise, at least a couple of them will have played Baldur’s Gate 3.

Douse has also shared how much time we’ve been collectively playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam Deck. More than 17 million hours which, when broken down, equates to almost 2,000 years, and that’s on the handheld arm of a single platform. The numbers we’ve racked up across all platforms don’t bear thinking about.
