Giant Enshrouded update sees the survival game’s player count skyrocket fivefold

The time is right to come back to Enshrouded, and plenty of players are doing just that. Developer Keen Games has just launched the biggest update yet for its survival RPG, and the effect has been dramatic. With a new mountain biome to explore, additional wildlife and monsters, a pet system, an increase to the level cap, and fresh crafting options, if you’ve been waiting for a reason to return to Embervale, this is it. Combine that with a Steam sale and, as we near a week since the update’s launch, the response from the community continues to grow.

Enshrouded takes the elements I love from the best survival games – the sense of exploration, the fully customizable base building, and the mysterious world lore – and combines them with robust action RPG combat to make a game that’s tremendously rewarding to explore. It doesn’t push into full-blown Elden Ring territory, but it’s certainly enough to make combat feel dangerous and satisfying. Plus, you can play in co-op with the ability to have up to 16 players in one world.

Since release, the team at Keen Games has continued to build on its base game with new dungeons, NPCs, enemies, and boss fights. It’s implemented animal farming, musical instruments, and a wealth of additional UI improvements and performance tweaks. Now, it’s unleashed Souls of the Frozen Frontier, the biggest update yet in both content and scope. Along with raising the level cap to 35 and introducing additional gear, there’s plenty to explore.

That starts with the new biome, the mountainous Albaneve Summits. It’s a dangerous region filled with many monsters you won’t have seen before, and you’ll have to contend with deep snow and ice flats as you navigate. A new weather system means you’ll have to be prepared to handle the changing temperatures, so wrap up warm. Back at base, there are new cats and dogs, while your resident NPCs will now go about a daily routine.

The player response has been gradual but dramatic. Initially climbing slowly following the update’s release on Tuesday November 5, it’s continued to rise into the weekend and has now hit a 24-hour high of 33,540 concurrent users. That’s five times the highest it saw in the month prior, and the biggest number of active players Enshrouded has had at once since March, shortly after the game’s launch.

If you want to join them, Enshrouded is 20% off on Steam through Tuesday November 19, meaning you’ll pay just $23.99 / £19.99 for your copy. The full 1.0 launch is still planned to arrive in 2025. Head here if you’re eager to discover how far it’s come since release.
