Minecraft: How To Get A Music Disc And What It Does

Music discs are rare (if superfluous) items players can collect in Minecraft — we’re here to explain how to find them and how they work.

Originally called records, music discs were first added to the game in 2010 and got their official name of ‘music disc’ in the v1.0.14 update. In 2011, nine new music discs were added to the 1.0.0 Adventure update and full launch of the game. The Nether Update changed that and revamped the love and exploration for music discs, so here are some of the best ones in the game.

Wait

Wait is a lovely and upbeat remix of the Minecraft song. It’s marked by a blue center and is the only disc in the game to be renamed. Its original name was ‘Where Are We Now’ but had to be changed due to implementation issues with the spaces in its name.

The song features soft synths with some excellent electronic drum work. Listening to the song feels like you could be lost in a daydream, which would make a lot of sense given its original name.

11

The music disc 11, also known as ‘Eleven’, is a music disc you can only get as part of a mob drop. When a creeper is killed by a skeleton, there is a chance for this disc to drop, and it is the only disc to appear broken in the game.

This song is one of the creepiest in the game for its dark ambient noises. Sounds of heavy breathing, blocks breaking, and footsteps are all played under a vinyl static which gives off a haunting track. To make it even scarier, the track ends abruptly after a distorted noise goes off.

Stal

Stal is part of the nine music discs that were released with the Adventure Update. The music disc is recognized by its black colored center, which is very similar to disc 11, but it is intact.

Minecraft: Best Adventure Maps On The Marketplace

Minecraft is all about building, exploring, and experiencing all the game has to offer. These maps make for great additions to anyone’s world.

The song is a very relaxing jazz-like piece with the piano, saxophone, and double bass being the three main instruments you hear throughout the song. In a few interludes, a recorder takes the front stage and adds a little more fun to the track.

Ward

Ward is one of the nine music discs that were added to the full release of the game. It’s one of the few discs that share a green center but is a darker green color, unlike the almost similar Cat and Far discs.

The music disc starts off with a very creepy excerpt from Chopin’s Funeral March before being interrupted by vinyl static and changing to a more upbeat, electronic tune. Even at its start, you can still hear some dark undertones in the song.

6

Precipice

Precipice was added to the game in the first release of the Tricky Trials update in 2024 and can only be obtained in the standard vaults of the Trial Chambers.

Minecraft: Best Loot In Trial Chambers

You can find a lot of items in Trial Chambers while playing Minecraft, but only a selected few are really useful. Here’s our list of the best loot!

The song starts off with bells that instantly give off the feeling of a Christmas-inspired song with synths that join in but then transition into a fast-paced rhythm with drums and other instruments. Precipice sounds like a song that was made for you to play as you take on the Trial Chambers.

Creator

Creator is another music disc that was added to the game in the Tricky Trials update and can only be obtained as a reward in the Trial Chambers from the ominous vaults. The disc itself even looks like it’s made from copper.

Creator starts off with a music box melody and very much continues with that music box-inspired tune throughout the song. However, an electric and acoustic guitar join in and ramp up the song and adds an epic feel to it only to return to its soft music box ending.

4

Pigstep

Minecraft 1.16 was a big update as it was the Nether Update, which added new biomes, mobs, blocks, loot, and more to the Nether. It was also where Bastion Remnants were added, which housed some rare loot that could only be obtained in the Nether.

Pigstep was one of these rare items and instantly became a massive hit thanks to composer Lena Raine. It was the first disc that strayed away from the sounds of the previous ones with its dubstep and hip-hop inspired track. Not to mention, the disc also looks like it’s made from gold and netherrack.

13

13, also known as ‘Thirteen’, was one of the very first two music discs that were added to Minecraft during Alpha v1.0.14 in 2010, which also introduced the jukebox into the game as well.

21 Creepy Horror-Themed Minecraft Maps

Some dedicated Minecraft players have created rather creepy horror-themed maps. Here’s a look at a few of our favorites!

The disc is marked by its gold and white center. It’s an unsettling, cave-themed ambient track inspired by the 13 cave ambiance sounds that were part of the game when the disc was added and can be heard throughout the track.

2

Cat

Cat is the other of the very first two music discs to be added to Minecraft. Like most overworld music discs, Cat can be obtained by chance from creeper drops if killed by a skeleton, from a dungeon, ancient city, or woodland mansion.

The song is a very playful tune with warm, bubbly synths and soft percussion throughout the song. When listening to the song, it definitely sounds like the theme song to a cat doing whatever it wants. On the Legacy Console Edition of Minecraft, another minute of a song plays after Cat finishes, which is titled Dog.

1

Otherside

While Pigstep might’ve introduced many Minecraft fans to Lena Raine in what arguably is one of the best songs added to the game, Otherside equals the popularity of Pigstep with how well received it is.

1.18 saw the Caves & Cliffs: Part 2 update release in 2021 and added the music Otherside, which could be found in strongholds or dungeon chests. In 1.19, the music disc was added to the ancient city loot. It’s a happy, retro, uplifting song and feels like the song you would play at the end of a long journey.
