There’s still time to guarantee yourself a seat on the Brothership.
If you’re the kind of person who has PTSD flashbacks to Pokemon Gold & Silver’s Ice Path at the sheer mention of puzzles like this, fear not: we suffered so you don’t have to. Here’s a full walkthrough of the Slippenglide Island ice block puzzle.
How To Move The First Iceblock Into Position
Technically, the first iceblock is the one you move out of the way of the entrance to the puzzle. You’ll need to knock three iceblocks into the water to create a bridge that will allow you to exit the cave. Stand on the right side of the big iceblock and hit it with a hammer to make it slide down the path and fall into the water. That’s one down, two to go.
Iceblocks will continue to move in the direction you hit them until they run into a wall or a pit of spikes.
The spikes will destroy them, but a destroyed block will immediately respawn in its original position so you can try again.
To get started you’ll need to climb the stairs right at the entrance and position Luigi on the switch. Mario will be on his own for this one, while Luigi will be on standby to hit the switch and make the platforms and wall inside the puzzle move.
Have Luigi hit the switch to move the yellow platform to the top of the steps, then have Mario step onto it. Next, have Luigi hit the switch again to move the platform back to its original position. Mario can then begin jumping across the ice platforms towards the next solid platform.
The ice platforms have three stages. A smooth platform will crack when you step on it, a cracked platform will become completely cracked, and a Mario will fall through a completely cracked platform immediately if you try to step on it.
From the first yellow platform, jump forward, right, and forward again onto the next yellow platform. Jump onto the solid platform ahead and hit the big iceblock with your hammer to knock it down onto the ground.
Here are the moves to make to navigate the block to the exit:
- Hit it from above to move it south.
- Hit it from the right to move it west.
- Hit it from the bottom to move it north one block.
- Hit it from the right to move it west again.
- Hit it from above to move it all the way south, out of the room.
- Finally, hit it from the right. It will slide to the left and fall into the water, forming the next section of the bridge.
With the second block in place, you can activate the switch floating above it to create new ice platforms. Two blocks down, one to go. Head back into the big room and climb the stairs again. Assign Luigi to the switch and activate it to bring the yellow platform back to its original position.
How To Move The Last Iceblock Into Position
Once on the yellow platform, make Luigi hit the switch. Once it stops moving, jump forward three times, then jump twice onto the moving yellow platform.
This platform moves on its own, so you’ll need to time you jumps here to make sure the ice platforms don’t break underneath you.
Once the platform moves to the other side, jump to the next platform and hit the iceblock with your hammer to knock it down to the ground.
From here there’s a tricky diagonal jump you can make to reach an item box on the top left corner of the room. It doesn’t seem like you can make the jump at first, but with a little practice, you can reach it.
|Here are the moves you need to make to get the last iceblock into position:
- Hit it from the left to move it east.
- Hit it from above to move it south.
- Hit it from the right to move it west.
- Have Luigi activate the switch so that the yellow gate moves into a position that blocks the iceblock from moving into the spikes to the south.
- Hit it from above to move it south into the yellow gate.
- Hit it from the left to move it one space to the west.
- Hit it from above to move it south.
- Stand above the spikes to the left and position yourself diagonally so that you can hit the iceblock from the left, making it slide west.
- Hit it from the bottom to move it north.
- Hit it from the right to move it west.
- Hit it from above to move it all the way south, out of the room.
When you hit the block from the right it will slide west, fall into the water, and complete the iceblock bridge. Congrats, you have successfully navigated yet another one of life’s little iceblock puzzles.
