PlayStation 5 Pro Confirms Storage Improvement Over Original PS5

PlayStation 5 Pro Confirms Storage Improvement Over Original PS5

Key Takeaways

  • The PlayStation 5 Pro’s 2TB SSD will have 1.89TB available for users, an upgrade compared to the base PS5.
  • The PS5 Pro supports expanded storage options via USB and NVMe SSD slots, vital for growing game sizes.
  • Despite the launch price of $699, the PS5 Pro’s added storage will be beneficial for games with large install sizes.

According to sources, the internal 2TB solid-state drive (SSD) of the PlayStation 5 Pro will have approximately 1.89TB available for PS5 games and data available to users. When compared to the base PS5 having 667GB of its 825GB made available, the extra space on the PS5 Pro is approximately a 14% gain compared to its predecessor.

Along with offering additional storage space from the start, the PS5 Pro will improve performance in a variety of PS5 and PS4 titles. The PS5 Pro’s upgraded graphics processor, improved ray tracing, and the addition of the AI-based PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology will allow some games to run at higher quality and frame rates. Although some games have not been updated to take advantage of the PS5 Pro hardware, the console will have an option to enhance the image quality of certain PS4 games. It remains to be seen if popular titles like Bloodborne will be among them.

Scalpers Are Selling PS5 Pro Disc Drives for Ridiculous Prices

As the gaming world waits for the PlayStation 5 Pro, scalpers are reselling the console’s separate, attachable disk drives at inflated prices.

Though the PS5 Pro has been in development for a long time, some of that was spent on addressing the storage needs of gamers. According to TechRadar’s review of the PS5 Pro, the new Sony console will have more relative space for players to use for game installations. The PS5 Pro will include a 2TB internal SSD and houses the console’s operating system. After factoring in the space that the console’s OS will take up, PS5 Pro users will have approximately 1.89TB of the advertised 2TB available for use. By comparison, the first PS5 models shipped with an 825GB SSD but only made 667GB available for PS5 users to install games and apps. Ergo, the PS5 Pro’s operating system will take up slightly less space on the system’s internal SSD compared to previous PS5 consoles.

The PS5 Pro’s Internal Storage Improves Upon the PS5

  • The PS5 Pro’s 2TB SSD will include 1.89TB of available space for users.
  • This is an upgrade from the base PS5’s 825GB SSD, which had 667GB available for game data.
  • The PS5 Pro will continue to support user-expanded storage options via USB and m.2 NVMe SSDs.
  • Sony’s new PS5 Pro console will start at $699.

The PS5 Pro will also give users options to expand their storage options via an additional m.2 NVMe SSD slot inside the console, and via USB external drives. Plus, the additional space available on the PS5 Pro will come in handy as game installation sizes continue to grow. For example, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has an installation size of approximately 150GB before factoring in its PS5 Pro enhancement patch that requires another 6GB. On the original PS5 SSD, this would take up nearly a quarter of the 667GB of available space.

While the PS5 Pro launches on November 7 with a steep $699 price tag, the additional storage will be a boon for titles that have large installation sizes. Only time will tell how much that will matter to users interested in Sony’s upgraded console.
