The vast and untamed frontier of Red Dead Redemption invites you to an immersive world filled with plenty of side activities, from helping strangers and foraging for rare herbs to tracking and hunting down some of the dangerous creatures that inhabit the wild.
One of the Master Hunter challenges in the game requires you to take down two cougars with a melee weapon and skin two of them (not necessarily the ones killed with the melee weapon). However, tracking down cougars may seem challenging when you first set out to look for them, as these cats prefer sticking to shadows and ambush you when least expected. Knowing where to find these beasts and how to draw them out will greatly increase your chances of bringing down these predators.

Where To Find Cougars In Red Dead Redemption
Despite how rare cougars are to spot, these cats are surprisingly widespread across New Austin. In certain regions, cougars can be found throughout the day, while in others, they only come out of the shadows during specific times of the day. Here are some of the best locations to find cougars in Red Dead Redemption, including details about what time of the day you should set out to hunt them:
- Plainview: You can find a few cougars prowling the road that passes through Plainview. Fortunately, cougars in this area can be found throughout the day, except in rainy weather. However, beware of the wolf packs that also inhabit this region, as they can pose an additional threat while you’re distracted by cougars.
- Stillwater Creek: A few cougars can be found near the railway tracks north of Stillwater Creek during the daytime. Be careful while scouting this area, as cougars tend to hide in tall grass and ambush when least expected.
- Rio Bravo: You’ll find an increased cougar population in Rio Bravo, especially around Fort Mercer and Repentance Rock. The wild cats stalk this region throughout the day.
Sometimes, cougars can be spotted chasing NPCs or encountered when accepting random hunting challenges.

Things To Know Before Hunting Cougars In Red Dead Redemption
In Red Dead Redemption, cougars are smart creatures and they rarely attack head-on. These dangerous creatures are masters of ambushes. When attacked by a cougar, John can die in two hits and his horse only needs one to meet its end. If you’re playing the game on hardcore mode, you should avoid hunting cougars on horseback, as horse deaths are permanent in this mode. Hunting cougars in Red Dead Redemption requires a mixture of skill and luck, and here are a few tips to help you excel in the endeavor:
- Cougars make a distinct growl when they spot you, and when you hear this growl, immediately dismount from your horse to prevent its death from a cougar attack.
- Use bait to draw cougars out of hiding and take them out when they are busy investigating the bait.
- If attacked by a cougar, immediately consume medicine to restore your health and withstand a potential follow-up attack.
- If you wish to hunt cougars from horseback, consider taming a wild horse or stealing one.
- Cougars can be lassoed, but they cannot be restrained forever. If held in a lasso for too long, the cat will charge you instead of escaping. You may want to lasso a cougar if you plan to finish it off with a shotgun, but never lasso a cougar on horseback, as the beast will attack your horse once it breaks free.
