Orphan 3 Is Announced By Lionsgate

The horror movie Orphan stunned audiences with a major twist when it was released in 2009, and there is going to be another installment in the franchise. Variety reported that Orphan 3 is in the works.

Norman Golightly, the Dark Castle Entertainment CO-CEO, said:

“Dark Castle is excited to announce another terrifying chapter in the ‘Orphan’ saga. With the past success of the first two movies and another thrilling storyline, we are confident that ‘Orphan 3’ will be a must-see movie for both current fans of the franchise, and new fans alike.”

Dark Castle Entertainment and Lionsgate are developing Orphan 3, which will be directed by William Brent Bell and written by David Coggeshall. After Orphan was released in 2009, the prequel Orphan: First Kill came out in 2022. The prequel has a rating of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is higher than the original which has 60%. Although the reviews for Orphan: First Kill weren’t all positive, it grossed over $37 million at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo. Since the budget was $8 million, this was a success. Considering the popularity of the Orphan franchise, it’s no surprise that there will be an Orphan 3.

The original Orphan movie captivated horror fans, and there was even a 2023 documentary series called The Curious Case of Natalia Grace that appeared to tell a real-life story of the film’s premise. In Orphan, John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate Coleman (Vera Farmiga) adopt Esther, who they realize is actually an evil 33-year-old woman. In the prequel Orphan: First Kill, Esther/Leena terrorizes the Albright family, and they learn who she really is.

It’s unclear what Orphan 3 would be about, but the filmmakers will have to rework the timeline slightly or, otherwise, make sure there is a logical explanation. While Esther/Leena is still alive at the end of the prequel Orphan: First Kill, time passes and she ends up with the Colemans in Orphan. Since she dies at the end of the 2009 film, it wouldn’t make sense for the story in the third movie to take place after those events. Perhaps there could be a compromise and Orphan 3 could take place between the first and second movies. If that was the case, then audiences would easily believe that Esther/Leena had found another family to ruin.

No matter what Orphan 3 is about, horror fans will be glad to see Fuhrman playing her famous character again. The actress told Variety that she enjoyed that the prequel Orphan: First Kill had a big surprise. She said:

“I loved the twist because this is something that everybody expects when they see a sequel or a prequel, for it to rehash exactly what you knew about the last one.. And all of a sudden, it just flips everything on its head.”
