The unique setting of Deep South remains largely underutilized in gaming, but some exceptional games deliver this special swampy vibe just right.
This article gives players tips that will make it easier to become acquainted with this world and survive in it. While some of these tips are combat-focused, others provide useful information that can improve their experience when playing South of Midnight.
1
Master Dodging
A Key Feature in Combat
Besides Hazel’s melee and spell attacks, players can also dodge, and it’s probably the most important feature when it comes to fighting in South of Midnight. The only way to avoid enemy attacks in South of Midnight is to dodge them. Since Hazel doesn’t have a lot of healing options, players definitely don’t want to get hit.
Players should get in the habit of dodging out of the way as much as they can in order to perfect their technique. If they’re able to perform a “Perfect Dodge”, they’ll even receive the In the Nick of Time achievement as a reward.
2
Increase Hazel’s In-Air Time
Jump, Jump, Glide
In all of the Chapters in South of Midnight, players will encounter platforming sections. Gamers will have to master Hazel’s movement if they want to get past these areas of the map without losing health and getting scooped back up to where they were before.

Acing Hazel’s jumping abilities is key for fans wanting to make it to the other side while platforming around. Once they have unlocked the Double Jump and Glider abilities, they can maximize Hazel’s jump distance. To jump as far as possible in South of Midnight, players must perform a double jump and then open their glider to get even farther ahead.
3
Learn When to Heal
Heal According to Your Needs
In South of Midnight, there are no healing items, so players have very limited ways to heal themselves. Gamers must understand how they can heal themselves in South of Midnight and recognize that they won’t have the opportunity to do it often in combat. This way, they can manage their options accordingly so they can heal at the right time.
In combat, interacting with a Health Coil or Unraveling a fallen foe are the only ways to gain some health. While a Health Coil will significantly heal Hazel, players can only interact with it once during a battle (on standard difficulty and above), so gamers should save it for when their health is critical and they aren’t close to taking down a hostile. Otherwise, it’s best to attempt to kill an enemy and gain health from Unraveling them. It won’t heal as much, but it will disappear shortly after unless consumed, and it’s a way to delay using the Health Coil.
4
Explore Beyond the Main Path
Check the Quest Route and Go the Other Way
Players can activate and follow a Guiding Strand that creates a path that will lead players to their next objective. This makes it easier for them to know exactly where to go if they want to progress through the main story. However, even though it usually requires some backtracking afterward, it is definitely worth trying out other paths and seeing where they go.
