Each companion will require different methods to approach and befriend. And while there is some level of personal preference involved, here are the best animal companions you can obtain based on how easily you can get them, the reward of obtaining them, and the level of detail in their animations.

10

Raven

A raven from Disney Dreamlight Valley.
  • Found In: Forgotten Lands
  • Found When: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sunday mornings from 12 AM to 12 PM
  • Favorite Food: 5-Star Meals

While we prioritize ease on this list for gaining your companions, the raven is the one outlier we have and their animation alone is worth the trouble that they are to collect. These gorgeous birds from the Forgotten Lands are a little more finicky due to them only indulging in five-star meals. But we swear—they’re worth the work you put in.

They’re easy to approach, similarly to raccoons, and do a fun dance when fed or pet. Due to how much bigger they are, they’re also less likely to flutter around like Sunbirds.

9

Raccoon

A raccoon happy with blueberries.
  • Found In: Forest of Valor
  • Found When: Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons from 12 PM to 12 AM
  • Favorite Food: Blueberry

Okay, there’s good news and bad news when dealing with raccoons. The bad news is they are certainly one of the harder animals to approach. If you’re not slow and careful when approaching, they’re quick to run away.

They also love blueberries, which can be a little harder to acquire around Dazzle Beach and the Forest of Valor. But the good news is that once you get them on your side, they do an adorable sit-down animation and a happy dance whenever you next approach them, which makes the work all worth it.

Pua

  • Found In: The Search For Pua

Not only do you get to see your favorite Disney pals around the Valley, you can also bring fan-favorite companions into the realm as well, like Moana’s sweet pet pig Pua. He looks just like he did in the movie and there are some adorable animations, but he is by far the most time-consuming to acquire.

7

Crocodile

  • Found In: Glade of Trust
  • Found When: Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons from 12 PM to 12 AM.
  • Favorite Food: Lobster

Crocodiles might be scary in real life, but in Dreamlight Valley, they’re as cute as a button. Although they’re pretty easy to find in the Glade of Trust, getting them to trust you is a little tricky.

Similar to raccoons, they like to run away from you. You’ll want to wait for them to get closer to you and wait until their heads are down. Once they’ve finally shown they trust you, you can finally feed them their favorite food, Lobster, which can be found in the Glade of Trust.

6

Fox

  • Found In: Frosted Heights
  • Found When: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sunday mornings from 12 AM to 12 PM.
  • Favorite Food: White Sturgeon

The fox is an absolutely adorable animal companion. They’re certainly one of the bigger animals in the game, but their animation doesn’t make the gameplay lag. And their various colors add a certain vibrancy against the white snowy backdrop you find them in.

Once you find them in Frosted Heights, you’ll have to wait for it to approach you first. Then, once you follow it as it runs away, you’ll need to make sure you have a white sturgeon fish on hand in order for it to befriend you.

5

Sunbird

A Sunbird in Disney Dreamlight Valley
  • Found In: Sunlit Plateau
  • Found When: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sunday mornings from 12 AM to 12 PM
  • Favorite Food: Depends on color

Although these brightly-colored birds are wonderful to look at, you won’t be able to stay and look for long. Each different colored bird has different favorite foods, and they will certainly make you work to earn their affections.

They’ll flutter away every once in a while, but once you’ve caught up with them, some Housesleek Flowers are certain to make them love you. Their flying animation is great to witness compared to the scurrying creatures we’re used to and adds something different to your gameplay.

4

Scary Squirrel

  • Found In: The Great Blizzard

It’s like a regular squirrel…but scary! Okay, so, functionally, the scary squirrel is practically the same as the other squirrels, with the same animations and the same model. But it’s much rarer than the other variants, making it all the more alluring.

The spooky rodent can only be acquired by completing the Olaf friendship quest and The Great Blizzard quest. Although the model is basically the same, there’s a fun bonus of a fun spooky aura around it normally found festering around the Night Thorns.

3

Squirrel

  • Found In: Plaza
  • Found When: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons from 12 PM to 12 AM
  • Favorite Food: Peanut

These critters are one of the first companions that you encounter as you explore. Unlike some of the other creatures on this list, they are by far the easiest animal to befriend.

If you’re looking for a challenge, squirrels unfortunately won’t fit that quota, but the ease of getting them to like you helps get your feet planted when first starting out. Peanuts are their favorite, but since you can’t get Peanuts when you first start out, Apples are their second best. There are plenty of apples in the trees of the Plaza and Forgotten Lands.

2

Sea Turtle

  • Found In: Dazzle Beach
  • Found When: Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons from 12 PM to 12 AM
  • Favorite Food: Seaweed

You can find Sea Turtles at Dazzle Beach, either in or near the water. Like all sea creatures, they’re a little more timid than the others when you approach them. But if you’re patient enough, all you have to do is stand and wait a few seconds for them to come out. Then you can feed them.

Rabbit

  • Found In: Peaceful Meadow
  • Found When: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sunday mornings from 12 AM to 12 PM
  • Favorite Food: Carrots

Rabbits can be found running all over the Peaceful Meadow. They’re certainly the smallest companion model and true to their nature, they love to munch on carrots, which can be found at Goofy’s stall or after you plant them.

They are cute to chase and feed—and they’ll certainly make you chase. Before being able to feed them, they’ll play a game of tag with you, but after you’ve finally caught up with them, befriending them is one of the easier tasks to do in the realm.
