Summary
- Marvel Rivals players are complaining that its higher competitive ranks are filled with ‘imposters’.
- The issue appears to be Rivals awarding more points for wins than it takes away for losses.
- That has led to even the highest ranks including players who lose more than they win.
Marvel Rivals‘ competitive mode is a work-in progress, and players have notes. This is the first full-length season the game has ever had, and almost two months in, higher ranking players are starting to get fed up with what some have described as inflated ranks the higher up the Rivals’ competitive ladder you go.
While I can’t imagine they were the first to complain, Overwatch streamer EskayOW‘s notes about Rivals’ inflated ranks have received a lot of attention. Eskay believes it’s “too easy to climb” the ranks in competitive Rivals, and that has led to there being “imposters in every rank”. It leads to almost everyone having a roughly 50 percent win rate and thus the ranks not really meaning anything at all.

Eskay goes as far as to say that if even one of your team of six is one of these supposed imposters, you’ll almost certainly lose. The replies to the post largely echo Eskay’s annoyed sentiment, pointing to the way points are rewarded and taken away – alongside Chrono Shields which protect you from losing points when defeated – as being the issue.
Marvel Rivals Players Think Competitive’s Ranks Are Filled With ‘Imposters’
Not Fake Players, Just Players Who Don’t Deserve To Be There
While it’s unclear exactly how the points you receive or lose at the end of competitive matches in Marvel Rivals are calculated, you will always receive points for winning, and lose them when you lose, regardless of how well or poorly you performed. On top of that, the points you receive for winning will almost always be more than how many you lose for losing.
That’s what the inflated ranks and imposter accusations are rooted in as the more points for winning than you lose for losing system effectively means you are being rewarded for how much Rivals you play rather than how good you are. The argument is that those who deserve to be in the higher ranks are being paired with players who are there simply because they’ve been playing for a long time, possibly losing a lot more matches than they’ve won but still ranking up.
Eskay has closed by echoing a sentiment that has been doing the rounds in the competitive Rivals community for the last week or so, that being maybe fighting back against the planned mid-season reset was a bad idea. The reset would have dropped the so-called imposters back down the ranks, along with everyone else, but if the accusations are correct, it would have taken those players longer to rank back up than others.
Despite some suggesting the rank reset might have been needed, others have explained why it would have been little more than a band aid. There needs to be a better system in place, perhaps one where players compete in placement matches at the start of each season. For now, if you are among those who believe Rivals’ higher ranks are filled with imposters who are holding you back, you’ll either need to find five reliable teammates or deal with it.
