Age of Empires is one of greatest strategy game series of all time, but the remake of its mythological spinoff is the most recent highlight. Age of Mythology Retold launched last year to strong reviews, and has rolled out several free updates to make it even better, but now the time has come for it to release its first ever paid DLC: Immortal Pillars. Centred around Chinese folklore, it throws a dozen new gods into the game alongside fresh units and a nine-level campaign.
Despite some initial review bombing, Age of Mythology Retold’s 90% positive Steam rating, and a glowing review from us, proves that it’s more than worth its salt. Using the classic 2002 game as its base, the new and improved version has gone down a storm. Free updates have added massive new game modes and a difficulty setting that makes it one of the toughest strategy games around right now, but the Immortal Pillars DLC is a different beast entirely.
Inspired by and remastering the Tale of the Dragon expansion for the original Age of Mythology, Retold will see 12 new gods from Chinese mythology including Fuxi, Shennong, and Gonggong, added to the game. They possess unique god powers and abilities, and can control new units that are beasts plucked from ancient Chinese legends. These creatures are also joined by human units such as crossbow-wielding ranged soldiers and heavily armoured cavalrymen on horses.
Expensive new Wonders can also be built to advance your age and push you rapidly towards a win condition. It’ll take a lot of resources to build, but they’re worth prioritising as Wonders will please the gods who will bestow a huge buff or bonus upon you.
There’s also a new nine-level campaign and seven fresh maps for you to battle it out on. It’s a pretty big expansion and will give yet more fan-favorite gods and eras from the original game a fresh lick of paint.
