Grapple Gun

Though purportedly a weapon, the grapple gun in Tomb Raider: Chronicles is more of a key item. It fires a hook that can help Lara traverse to higher ledges. Ammo is scarce for the grapple gun, and it’s essential to find all three hooks to finish the stealth-heavy final episode.

The Grapple Gun is one of the novel mechanics introduced in Tomb Raider: Chronicles that proves the game’s negative reputation is too harsh. Core Design would hardly have created and implemented a new grappling mechanic if the studio was only doing it for the money.

Crossbow

Though Lara picks it up in a museum in The Last Revelation, this crossbow isn’t all that old-fashioned, as its model shows a magazine attachment and it has a laser sight attachment. The crossbow is essential for solving a timed puzzle in the museum by shooting all the targets accurately.

Why have a bow and arrow when you could have a crossbow?

While its normal ammo isn’t very useful after the puzzle, the crossbow can also fire poison arrows and explosive arrows. Explosive arrows are self-explanatory, while poison arrows drain enemies of their health until a single bullet can finish them off.

There was a glitch in the classic PC version of The Last Revelation that allows Lara to use the laser sight with her pistols, even though the two cannot be combined. It seems this useful bug was patched out in the remaster.

Viper SMG

Angel of Darkness has a rather subdued showing of its weapons, lacking the punchy sound effects and generous ammo count of previous entries. The Viper SMG offers the gunplay a ray of hope. Originally used by a hitman targeting Lara, the weapon is one of the two SMGs you can acquire in the game.

With a 70-round capacity and high firing rate, the Viper SMG is quite satisfying to use against bosses. The gun is based on the PP-19, which takes 64 rounds per magazine.

HK Gun

A high-risk and high-reward weapon, the HK gun in Tomb Raider: Chronicles is a remodeled version of the MP5 from Tomb Raider 3. The HK gun gobbles up ammo very quickly and places Lara at a huge disadvantage by restricting her movement while firing.

However, the HK gun is invaluable in the final episode due to its high damage per shot and scope attachment. Given that you’ll be facing heavily armoured enemies in the final level, the scope will allow you to get some invaluable quick headshots.

The HK gun’s firing modes can be changed in the inventory between single shots, three-round bursts and fully automatic. We advise switching to single shots and using the scope to get headshots.

Revolver

A late-game weapon in The Last Revelation, the revolver is essentially Tomb Raider’s take on the magnum from Resident Evil. This powerful weapon is only obtainable in the late-game Cairo levels, but does devastating damage against the mercenaries hunting Lara.

Revolvers are great weapons, yet they’re even cooler when these characters are using them.

In the first episode of Tomb Raider: Chronicles, the revolver shows up once again. Combined with a laser sight, it’s a required item to defeat a boss whose only weak point is his eyes. While the in-game model has a six-shot cylinder, this isn’t a problem in TR 4 and 5 because the games have no reload mechanic.

Mag Vega

An early-game SMG Lara can obtain before infiltrating a nightclub, the Mag Vega is one of the most fun weapons in Angel of Darkness. It resembles the HK gun from Tomb Raider 5, though it lacks the scope.

Shortly after acquiring the Mag Vega, you get to use it in an extended combat-platforming sequence. While most of Angel of Darkness’ early game revolves around exploration and fetch-questing, the combat sections where you use the Mag Vega make it feel almost like an action game. Almost.

Uzis

The Uzis have been a Tomb Raider staple since the original game. However, the first three games did not feature an accurate Uzi model: the guns themselves resembled Ingram MAC-10 pistols instead. This was finally remedied in The Last Revelation, where the model was switched to resemble an IMI Micro Uzi.

The Uzis are popular for their high rate of fire and satisfying sound effect. However, they use up ammo rather quickly and their damage per shot is equivalent to Lara’s infinite-ammo pistols. You can obtain them early in the game if you discover a secret room; if not, one of your enemies will drop them later.

Grenade Gun

The grenade gun was introduced in Tomb Raider 2 and became a fan favourite due to its necessity in the boss fight immediately afterwards. Tomb Raider 4 features the most versatile variant of the grenade gun in the classic series. The grenade gun now takes three types of ammo: normal grenades, super grenades and flash grenades.

While flash grenades are only useful for temporarily blinding enemies and serve as just a gimmick weapon, the super grenades can hit enemies’ weak points for massive damage. The grenade gun is one of the few ways to permanently get rid of the immortal skeletons in Tomb Raider 4.

Shotgun

Lara’s second-most important weapon is her trusty shotgun; this is usually the first limited-ammo firearm she finds in the classic series. The Last Revelation and Chronicles feature a modified SPAS-12 as Lara’s buckshot dispenser of choice.

The shotgun has a low firing rate, but does high damage at close range. The Last Revelation introduced a new ammo type for the weapon, which has an even wider spread. The shotgun’s pump action is one of the most satisfying and memorable sound effects in the classic Tomb Raider series.

The original versions of The Last Revelation and Chronicles featured a shotgun model that paradoxically lacked a pump. The remaster amends this, and the new shotgun model has a pump as well as a more detailed barrel.

The dual pistols aren’t just a weapon, they’re part of Lara’s classic outfit. They are as closely tied to the character as mushrooms to Mario or rings to Sonic. Is it any coincidence that Angel of Darkness, the only classic title where Lara lacks her infinite-ammo babies, was a critical and commercial failure? We think not.

Modelled in TR4 and 5 after the Colt M1911, these dual pistols are enough to take on any mortal foe. They won’t work against mummies or skeletons, and TR5 requires the revolver for a gimmick boss, but a skilled tomb raider can get through the entirety of TR4 with just these handguns alone.
