As the 2014 action RPG developed by Dimps has finally broken the shackles of the PlayStation Vita with Freedom Wars Remastered and made its way to other platforms, it is important to know about everything that your character has at their disposal to help their Panopticon prosper. Aside from the general melee and ranged weapons that are available for use in your arsenal, you also have three different Thorns that bring unique advantages to the table in various combat situations.

But each Thorn type comes with its own set of strengths and weaknesses, along with specific uses, so it is crucial to think deeply about which one you should take to battle, depending on the scenario that you and your teammates are facing.

Healing Thorn
Green
Although it may seem like having a Healing Thorn on hand would be responsible for making or breaking any combat situation, its overall utility comes into question when you realize that you can simply just revive your teammates using any Thorn instead. That makes it the most unproductive Thorn to have in battle, as although healing your teammates and yourself in tough scenarios may sound great, it takes a little too long and wastes time that could otherwise be used in dealing damage against the enemy.
Another issue arises when its second charge utility is brought into play, as the healing thicket that it creates is quite vulnerable and can be destroyed by not just your opponents but also your own teammates. Sure, if you have a player on your team whose sole responsibility is to act as support for the rest of the squad with no intention of getting into direct combat, then the Healing Thorn can be a worthy item.
But that is basically the only scenario in which it proves somewhat useful, as the healing duration lasts for a little too long, which is why it pales in comparison to the other two Thorns.
2
Shielding Thorn
White
If you are the type of player who likes to throw themselves head first into battles to unleash some melee fury on the enemy, it is essential to make sure that your defense is well taken care of so you do not take unnecessary damage. This is where the Shielding Thorn comes into play, which not only increases your defensive abilities but also does it for the rest of your squad, keeping your team safe from danger in combat.
Aside from the defensive boosts that its first charge comes with, the Shielding Thorn can also create a barrier that can protect you and your team from incoming projectiles or bullets when charged into its second stage. There is a catch, though, as the Shielding Thorn is not exactly effective against every single enemy type, as, although it can stop the majority of Sinner attacks, it falls short when faced with bigger enemies like the Abductors.
It can also get quite jarring to try and aim for your teammates while trying to attach the Shielding Thorn to them for healing, so chances are that you will mostly be using it on yourself.
1
Binding Thorn
Red
It may be surprising that the default Thorn that every player has equipped is the best out of the entire roster, as the Binding Thorn does not just serve its purpose on a single front. Firstly, it can be used to stun and immobilize various types of enemies, ranging from Sinners at its first level and bigger Abductors at its second, making it a useful Thorn to have regardless of the opponent that you are facing.
Once an enemy is stunned or trapped thanks to the Binding Thorn, it gives you and your team a very welcome opening to go all out on the offensive front, providing you with a window in which you can get as many hits as possible.
Of course, that window also gives you the opportunity to fully charge your melee swing, which is something that is not really easy to do in the majority of combat situations.

Secondly, it also boosts your drag-down ability, making it much easier to bring enemies down whether they are holding a shield or not, which gives a massive edge over the other Thorns present in the game. Since Abductors can be a pain to fight, given their size and power on the battlefield, dragging them down is one of the most convenient ways to take them out, which is where the Binding Thorn can provide a big assist.
As a cherry on top, you can also use the Binding Thorn’s abilities on your allies, giving their drag-down stats significant buffs so that everyone can hold their own against even the deadliest of enemies. If you and your team want to get through a run as quickly as possible, the Binding Thorn is the one that you would want equipped.
All of that combined makes the Binding Thorn the standout Thorn to have on your loadout, as it can be used in a wide variety of mission types, ranging from specific objectives to PvP matches.
