One Piece: Why Luffy Needs A Bigger Power Up Than Gear 5

Luffy’s strongest form, Gear 5, is not enough for One Piece’s final saga.

While both events were equally exciting, fans know that the former is where ferocious combat was observed. One Piece chapter 1140 gave fans a very exciting glimpse of the power do the former left-hand man of the Pirate King, Scopper Gaban, and it is safe to say that was absolutely phenomenal, to say the least, and with that, he’s now been confirmed as a user of Conqueror’s Haki Infusion, or Advanced Conqueror’s Haki, which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Scopper Gaban Confirmed To Have Advanced Supreme King Haki

  • Scopper Gaban Casually Fought Luffy
  • His Attacks Are Phenomenally Powerful

In the previous chapter of One Piece, fans saw Scopper Gaban finally be introduced, and the author made it clear to point out that Gaban was a pirate in the same league as Roger and Rayleigh, and at the same time, that he was equal to them. Of course, it was easy for fans to imagine that Scopper Gaban was quite powerful, and in this week’s chapter, Oda went on to show fans exactly how strong he truly was. Gaban Vs Luffy began on a rather comedic note, and it must be noted that neither of the two was actually serious at this point. Scopper Gaban was playing around with Luffy and wasn’t even equipped with his twin axes, while Luffy wasn’t trying to fight or hurt Gaban either.

You want the key right? Then take it from me! Unless you think you can’t? — Scopper Gaban

Luffy’s goal was to take the key and that’s what he tried to do, but he repeatedly failed. Scopper Gaban kept toying with him, and landed quite a few hits on him as well. However, two attacks of his stood out the most. Out of those two attacks, it was the first one that essentially went on to confirm that Scopper Gaban has advanced Conqueror’s Haki. When Scopper Gaban was fighting Luffy with the key, moments after Luffy started taking him seriously, he dodged his grab attack and jumped up in the air, then infused his key in Haki.

This key was fully coated in Haki at this point, and it was clearly seen emitting black lightning. Gaban then brought the key down on Luffy, and slammed him completely under it. Luffy was crushed under it and as the attack slammed him under, massive black lightning bolts were seen being emitted from the ground. Even after the attack, the lightning bolts were seen around Luffy, which further goes to show that the attack was indeed infused with Supreme King Haki.

The Indicators Of Supreme King Infusion

The Black Lightning Isn’t The Only Indicator

Naturally, many fans are confused about whether the attack Gaban used consists of the Color of the Supreme King or not. While some are vehemently in denial of the fact that the left-hand of the Pirate King can possess a power as great as Supreme King Haki, some others simply don’t want to acknowledge this fact and give him the credit that he deserves. The simple answer here is that Gaban can utilize Conqueror’s Haki very well.

He’s the man who was equal to Roger and Rayleigh, Scopper Gaban! — Oimo and Kashi

For one, the attack that Gaban launched on Luffy clearly showed the usage of black lightning. Lightning that leaves a trail before even making contact with the enemy is a big indicator of the Color of the Supreme King being infused in the attack. However, while this is usually the case, there are a few additional criteria that need to be met.

For instance, Koby’s Honesty Impact gave off back lightning, but it most certainly didn’t fulfill all the criteria, which is why it is classified as a Color of Arms attack. Along with black lightning, yet another indicator that one needs to prove that the attack used sees the usage of the Color of the Supreme King Haki is the rumble or “Bzzt” sound effect. Usually, when attacks are launched in One Piece, Oda leaves behind SFX to indicate what sound the attack is giving off. When Oda draws an attack with Conqueror’s Haki, it gives off a rumbling sound, similar to lightning. Ever since the concept of Supreme King Infusion was properly introduced in One Piece, that is post-One Piece 1010, every single attack that one performs that has a trail of black lightning and a rumble SFX are, undeniably, Conqueror’s Haki attacks.

One Piece: Oda Introduces Two New Members Of The Holy Knights

Oda has introduced two new members of the Holy Knights. Here’s who they are in One Piece.

Gaban’s attack using the key on Luffy meets both criteria. It has a trail of lightning left behind, and at the same time, it also has the rumbling lightning SFX. Both these things put together confirm the fact that Scopper Gaban is a user of Conqueror’s Haki.

Beyond that, it should also be common sense for Scopper Gaban to have Conqueror’s Haki. After all, he doesn’t have a Devil Fruit yet is a top tier capable of pushing both Luffy and Zoro to their strongest and tag teaming him in battle. This level of strength cannot be attained by using just Color of Arms alone.

The Destructive Power Of Gaban’s Attacks

Gaban Can Destroy Whole Islands

Gaban was casual throughout the battle that he fought against Luffy and Zoro. His goal was simply to test how good Luffy is, and more importantly, whether he has truly acquired Gear 5 or not. Upon seeing Nika, Gaban immediately gave up on the battle, meaning his true strength remains unknown, unfortunately. But, what fans can clearly see is that Scopper Gaban definitely possesses tremendous firepower. His named attack, which didn’t seem to include much Haki, was strong enough to force Zoro to shout worriedly at Luffy to dodge, and intervene himself. It chopped off a giant tower in Aurust Castle, and even cut a whole cloud above.

This is only a small glimpse of what Gaban can do in battle. At this point, it is undeniable that Scopper Gaban is in the same league of strength as Roger and Rayleigh and one of the biggest legends of the world. Fans can only hope that Oda throws more light on him as One Piece continues over the course of the next few weeks, especially now that Elbaf has seen the introduction of some powerful enemies.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus apps. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1140, is set to be February 23, 2025.
