Summary

  • Square Enix is still working on Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remakes according to a new leak.
  • Both games are in “active development” despite Square still not confirming they even exist.
  • Despite this, the leaker doesn’t expect the FF9 remake to be released until at least 2026.

The love and attention that has gone into Final Fantasy 7‘s remake has had fans of other games in the series hoping the same formula might be applied to other installments. There have been rumblings that Final Fantasy 9 will be the next game in the series to get the remake treatment, and even though Square Enix is yet to officially confirm that, a new leak has claimed it and a Final Fantasy Tactics remake are still happening.

That’s according to the usually reliable NateThaHate (thanks, VGC). Nate was asked on Twitter if there’s any news on the rumored remakes for Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics. The leaker replied that both remain in active development, but it’s unlikely we will see either of them released before the end of 2025.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake Needs To Be Far Less Ambitious

If it’s coming, Square Enix needs to do it right.

Nate added that “maybe” Final Fantasy 9’s remake will be released in 2026, although even that is far from a concrete answer on when exactly we might actually get to see this project. Just confirmation that it’s real would be nice, although, on the other hand, Square is likely looking around at the likes of Wonder Woman and Wolverine and decided against announcing a game years before it’s ready to update people on its progress, let alone release it.

Final Fantasy 9 And Tactics’ Remake Still Exist, Apparently

They Remain In “Active Development” At Square According To The Latest Leak

Even though we don’t have a Final Fantasy 9 remake, Square has made sure the original version of the game is available on just about every platform possible. It’s available on PS4, which means it can also be played on PS5, and was released on Xbox and Nintendo Switch in 2019.

As for official word on a remake, fans started to get their hopes up when Final Fantasy 9 content was added to Final Fantasy 14 last year. Yoshi-P quickly intervened to make it clear the crossover was not an indicator that a remake is in the works. The Final Fantasy director also noted that similar to Final Fantasy 7, if FF9 were to get the remake treatment, it would be impossible to contain it to a single game.

Yoshi-P did quite the opposite when asked about a new Tactics game. The director said “It’s probably about time we do a new one” when asked about the spinoff series last year. With no new Final Fantasy projects confirmed until the final part of the FF7 Remake trilogy, which is still years away, Square does have some time to fill on its Final Fantasy slate. Even if the FF9 and Tactics remakes aren’t released this year, hopefully, we have at least heard something about them in an official capacity by the end of 2025.
