Elden Ring Nightreign Brings Back Margit Surprise Attacks

Elden Ring Nightreign Brings Back Margit Surprise Attacks

Summary

  • Margit can once again surprise attack you in Elden Ring Nightreign.
  • One of the random encounters on Day 2 sees him chase you across the entire map until either you defeat him, or everyone dies.
  • If you manage to fight him off, you’ll get a bunch of Runes and a permanent damage boost.

In Elden Ring, after being led to believe that you defeated Margit at Stormveil Castle, he launches a surprise attack with another projection just outside Leyndell. It’s an incredibly tense moment, especially after you’ve carved through a small battalion of Tree Sentinels to reach the outskirts. Yet, somehow, Nightreign takes it up a notch.

The new Elden Ring spin-off, a battle royale-inspired roguelite, has a few unique encounters that can trigger at random to spruce up a match. One of which sees the entire map engulfed in a red circle while Margit (known only as “The Fell Omen”) hounds you to the ends of Limvelt.

If you defeat him, you get a boost to all damage dealt, but if every player dies, you respawn with a permanent increase to damage taken. Death also drops you down a level, so it’s a huge blow ahead of that day’s final boss.

We got unlucky and ran into Margit five times in a row. That did seem to confirm, however, that it only happens on Day 2.

While we were instructed during the preview to run away if we were outmatched, Margit followed us even into the narrow passageways of the underground mines, teleporting when we got too far away. Being cornered in a cramped cave while Margit charges at you is terrifying. My advice? Don’t run into a dungeon. Find a nice open field.

Margit, The Fell Omen Is One Of The Final Bosses

Morgott, AKA Margit, in Elden Ring

What’s especially horrifying about this random encounter is that Margit is also one of the final bosses that can spawn at the end of Day 2, meaning that he’s one of the tougher fights in the game. And since you’re fighting him early, you’re much weaker than you would be had you fought him at the end. To make matters even worse, if you defeat him when he launches his surprise attack, you still have to face the final boss of that day. Classic FromSoft, eh?

That was never Margit for us, so I can’t confirm whether you can fight Margit twice on Day 2.

The upside is that he drops a lot of Runes, and you get a damage boost, but facing off against two Tree Sentinels and a Draconic Tree Sentinel after already having fought Margit is an exhausting gauntlet. The other random encounters seem to be a lot more relaxed.

The one other random encounter we saw in the preview was indicated by a much smaller red circle on the map. Upon arriving, we found an army of giant ants who were pretty easy to take care of, dying in two or three hits. Once all of them were slain, we got a random boon each, mine being extra I-frames during rolling. It was a breath of fresh air after having to fend off Margit five times in a row.
