Great Scott!

It looks like Back to the Future has a game in development, according to series co-creator Bob Gale. The sci-fi franchise has long been dormant since the third and final movie, Back to the Future Part III, released in 1990. That said, its cultural impact cannot be overstated.

As first spotted by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, Gale, in an interview with Cleveland.com (paywalled), shared that a video game is in the works.

“We’ve got a shot at a new video game based on Back to the Future,” Gale said when asked about the future of the franchise.

He added, “I don’t want to tell you any more than that because I’m not allowed to, but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Knock on wood that it will happen.” To this point, it’s unclear the scope of the project, or when it would potentially be released. For what it’s worth, both Marty McFly and Doc Emmet were part of the 2024 Funko Fusion game, though it’s likely that Gale is referencing another project altogether.

We need more than the most famous triple-A games to become movies if game adaptations are to be a long term thing.

There Really Hasn’t Been A Good Back To The Future Game

For as popular as the Back to the Future franchise is, it really hasn’t had a standout game. Famously, Gale called the LJN-developed NES title “truly one of the worst games ever.”

“The LJN people did not want any input from the filmmakers, but they promised to show us the game when ‘it was ready,’” he said in an interview. “I was outraged when they finally showed it to me and had all kinds of things I wanted changed, but of course we were told it was too late to change anything.”

In that same interview, Gale said that he told fans not to buy the game because he was so “ashamed that a product this bad would have our brand on it.”

Flash forward to 2010, and Telltale did produce a five-part Back to the Future game that received good reviews. Outside of that, though, the franchise has largely been relegated to cameo duty, including a crossover with PowerWash Simulator. Based off Gale’s words, that reality could change in the near future.
