Summary

  • Warner Bros reportedly canceled The Flash video game due to poor DCEU performance, impacting multiple games.
  • Flash has historical success in comics, TV, and games, but has struggled in the DCEU.
  • Warner Bros Montreal shifted focus from Flash to assisting on Wonder Woman amid uncertainty.

A new video game, with The Flash as the central character, was reportedly canceled by Warner Bros Games after the disastrous performance of the 2023 DCEU movie. The news about the binned Flash project comes at a time when Warner Bros is reeling from the effects of multiple underperforming games, such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, released in recent years.

There’s little doubt that The Flash is an instantly recognizable name and one of the most important superheros from DC’s rich lore. Over the speedster’s 80 years of existence, there have been innumerable comics, video games, movies, and more, featuring him as a key character. In the past decade, The Flash has found notable success, thanks to the well-received Injustice games and the long-running namesake TV series that concluded in 2023. Regardless of that, the Justice League character’s effort to reinvigorate the Warner Bros-helmed DCEU and play a vital role in the production house’s movie business has not been fruitful. Worryingly, it now appears that the superhero’s failings in that department may have impacted his chances of getting his own video game.

DC Studios Holding Off On The Flash Makes Sense

DC Studios pauses The Flash’s return, focusing on rebuilding the DCU with fresh stories and iconic heroes under James Gunn’s vision.

An unannounced video game based on The Flash, which was being eyed by the Gotham Knights studio Warner Bros Montreal, was scrapped some time ago, according to Bloomberg. Reportedly, the decision was spurred by the poor performance of DCEU’s The Flash in June 2023, suggesting the project was ditched at some point during the past year-and-a-half. Interestingly, the source revealed that WB Montreal’s interest in pursuing a Flash-centric game came after the developer was given a choice between the Scarlet Speedster and the popular Batman villain, the Joker. This, too, happened after a game pitch related to John Constantine, a non-mainstream DC character, was not greenlit by Warner Bros Games. As per the source, multiple leads at the Canada-based studio have left the company since the Flash game’s cancelation, due to “lack of new games” and “frustration with their corporate bosses.”

Warner Bros Montreal Shift Focus from The Flash to Wonder Woman

Post the scrapping of its Flash game, Warner Bros Montreal has reportedly been aiding the development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman title, which was first revealed in late 2021. However, even that project seems to be in an uncertain place at this point, with barely any official updates dished out since the initial announcement. If Wonder Woman ever sees the day of light, Warner Bros Games would hope to drive it in a different direction compared to its other recent releases, such as MultiVersus which is set to end its server support in May 2025.

Apart from the forthcoming Wonder Woman project, rumors indicate that another major DC hero is expected to get his own game in the future. Following the success of the VR title called Batman: Arkham Shadow, the Caped Crusader is being tipped for a return to the single-player game category under the supervision of Batman Arkham creator Rocksteady.
