More and more games seem to be adopting the strategy of giving players control over a plethora of different settings. This helps the player define the experience they’d like to have in the game, changing how important game mechanics work more or less at will and putting the difficulty emphasis where they’d like it to be.

Knock out the Nazis’ garish decorations in Sniper Elite: Resistance.
Sniper Elite: Resistance has incredibly robust settings, allowing you to change just about every facet of gameplay. You can have as difficult or easy an experience as you’d like. With levels that are huge and very replayable, it’s a welcome aspect of what’s already a great Sniper Elite game.
All Difficulty Modes
There are five difficulty presets in Sniper Elite: Resistance, which are detailed below.
Difficulty |
Details |
---|---|
Civilian/Very Easy |
This is the easiest difficulty. Every single individual setting is at its easiest possible option. Health regeneration will be fast and full, enemies will be particularly easy to fight against and less perceptive. This turns off bullet drop and wind effects, making bullet travel time the only thing you’ll need to worry about when it comes to putting Nazis in the ground. |
Cadet/Easy |
This changes some of the difficulty options to their next easiest options, including only being able to heal one bar of health, and finding ammo and items a little bit less easy. This option turns bullet drop on but still leaves wind effects off. |
Sharpshooter/Medium |
This puts health regeneration at one bar and normal speed, puts enemies at normal difficulty/perceptiveness, keeps bullet drop on, and also turns wind effects on, which will be true for every difficulty at medium and harder. |
Sniper Elite/Hard |
This makes health regeneration slow and reduces player resilience, with the biggest difference being increased enemy efficacy. It also reduces information displayed on the radar. |
Authentic |
This turns health regeneration off entirely, ensures ammo is lost when you reload with an empty clip, reduces player resilience, and puts enemies at their highest possible efficacy. It also turns off Focus effects, and turns off empty lung, which slows down time and displays where a shot is going to land. |
Every Difficulty Setting In Sniper Elite: Resistance
There are difficulty presets for ‘Combat’, ‘Sniping’, and ‘Tactical’ in Sniper Elite: Resistance, which will change many of the settings listed below in groups. However, by selecting ‘Advanced Difficulty Customization,’ you can change every individual setting at will.
To access Advanced Difficulty Customization, select ‘Difficulty’ from the ‘Mission Preparation’ page in ‘Mission Select’. It can also be accessed when starting a new campaign by selecting ‘Advanced Difficulty Customization’ at the bottom of the ‘Difficulty’ screen.
Every Difficulty Setting And What It Does
Here’s an explanation for every difficulty setting.
Setting |
Explanation |
---|---|
Combat |
This changes the preset of most settings underneath it. At a baseline, if you’re looking for an extremely difficult experience or if you’re new to the series, change this accordingly. |
Friendly Fire |
When playing Co-Op, this controls whether friendly players can deal damage to each other. That damage can be set to ‘Reduced’ or ‘Full’. |
Co-Op Respawning |
This sets whether Co-Op teammates can respawn or not. In Survival or Axis Invasion, players will still respawn at the end of a wave or round. |
Health Regeneration |
This changes how much health regenerates automatically, if any. It also changes the speed at which that health regenerates. |
Revival |
This controls how much health a player will have after being revived and what will be required to revive them. |
Ammo And Searching |
This changes how many items and how much ammo will be present on the map to find. |
Automatic Swapping |
If toggled ‘On,’ this setting will automatically swap your weapon or item when your current one is empty. |
Throw Away Clip |
This adds more realistic reloading, where when you reload your weapon, any ammo left in your current clip will be lost. |
Player Resilience |
This controls how much damage your character takes. |
Enemy Resilience |
This controls how much damage enemies take. |
Enemy Aggression |
This controls how aggressive enemies will be in tracking you down. |
Enemy Accuracy |
This controls how accurate enemy shots are going to be. (This does not affect enemy snipers.) |
Enemy Skill |
This controls how intelligently enemies will act. (This does not affect enemy snipers.) |
Enemy Sniper Skill |
This affects both an enemy sniper’s accuracy and intelligence. |
Enemy Perceptiveness |
This controls how likely it is that an enemy is going to see or hear you. |
Enemy Responsiveness |
This controls how quickly an enemy is going to spot and react to seeing or hearing you. |
Damage Ends Empty Lung |
When toggled ‘On‘, taking damage will force you out of ‘Empty Lung‘. |
Damage Ends Focus |
When toggled ‘On‘, taking damage will force you out of ‘Focus‘. |
Focus |
When toggled ‘On‘, you’ll be able to enter focus to see unseen enemies around you. |
Sniping |
This is a preset of different settings related to the difficulty of sniping. |
Bullet Drop |
This changes whether bullets will drop due to the effects of gravity. |
Active Reloading |
This affects how large the window for ‘Active Reloading‘ is, which is a mechanic that enables you to reload faster. |
Wind |
This changes whether the wind will affect a bullet’s trajectory. |
Empty Lung Assist |
This changes how severe the Empty Lung mechanic is. Empty Lung slows down time, zooms your view, and shows where your bullet is going to land based on bullet drop and wind. |
Tactical |
This is a preset of different settings related to the game’s tactical mechanics. |
HUD |
This changes how much information is displayed on the HUD, including your heart rate, objective, health, ammo, and more. |
Radar |
This changes how much information is displayed on your radar. |
Tagging |
This changes how tags on enemies are displayed, including how long they’re kept. |
Authentic Zoom |
This changes your ability to zoom past your scope’s zoom level. |
Extra Information |
This changes how much extra information is shown on your HUD, including alarms. (The information that this setting toggles is mostly related to items and objects not under your characters’ control, separately from the other HUD setting.) |
Defusal Radius |
This changes the interactable area for explosives. |
Awareness Audio |
This sets whether an audio cue is played when an enemy discovers you. |
Skills |
This sets whether skill points that you earn and apply are usable or not. |
Best Settings For A Balanced Playthrough
While the presets are a good starting point for customizing the difficulty to your liking, you can take it a bit further. For a challenge that feels a bit more authentic than the default but isn’t as difficult as the game can get, these settings are a good compromise:
Settings that are not listed below are set to their default value, as set by the ‘Medium’ difficulty.
Setting |
Value |
---|---|
Health Regeneration |
Slow |
Automatic Swapping |
Off |
Throw Away Clip |
On |
Player Resilience |
Reduced |
Enemy Sniper Skill |
Increased |
Enemy Responsiveness |
Increased |
Authentic Zoom |
On |
These settings make the game feel a bit less arcade-like at times; it gets rid of the extra zoom effects, you’ll need to pay attention while you’re reloading, and your health isn’t quite as easy to get back.
On top of that, it makes enemy snipers a slightly bigger threat than they were before. In normal settings, enemy snipers are barely more of a threat than normal enemies in most situations, and making them a bit more of a priority can make them feel a bit like mini-bosses scattered throughout the map.
As a bonus, set ‘Bullet Kill Cameras’ to ‘Frequently’, and you’ll get a bullet-time effect on just about every single lethal shot outside close range.
