Strategy games need to be easy to understand at a glance. With so many decisions bouncing around your brain at any given moment, a cluttered UI or dizzyingly busy screen can quickly lead to your demise. That’s why I love the minimalist approach of Thronefall, which uses clear delineation, bold colors, and a surprisingly cozy vibe to make everything simple. The game’s just got even better, as the last content update is here with even more ways to play.
Since Grizzly Games brought Thronefall out of early access, it’s easily become one of the best strategy games on Steam. With almost 19,000 user reviews clocking in at 96%, it’s even earned the highly elusive ‘overwhelmingly positive’ rating on Valve’s platform. The premise is simple: build up your base during the day, and defend it from the hordes at night. Grizzly Games has endeavored to strip back the unnecessary complexity from the genre, with bold visuals and quicker sessions. So if you don’t have the time to defend against a siege for hours, you don’t need it.
The newest update for Thronefall is a big one, as Grizzly Games adds 12 brand-new mini-modes to the experience. These are “very difficult, often almost puzzle-like, bonus challenges with modified rules that heavily mix up the gameplay,” according to the studio.
There’s the True Endless mode, where the only way for it to end is for you to lose or surrender. Then there’s Reverse Siege, where you take on the role of the attacker instead of the defender. You can even try Summoner Gold, where you design the enemy waves and choose the difficulty while collecting as much gold as possible. There are nine more game modes to try, so be sure to give them all a go.
That’s not all with the latest Thronefall update, as quality-of-life fixes and bug squashing have been snuck in. There’s new language support, better controller detection, a speed toggle hotkey, and some color blindness settings to help you better orient yourself during play.
As for what’s next, Grizzly Games says “The content for Thronefall is hereby officially complete.” This means the studio is moving on to its next game, whatever that might be. You can still expect Thronefall bug fixes to help solve urgent issues, but these new modes appear to be the last content drop.
