About The Rose of Versailles (2025)

To Commemorate 50 Years of a Shо̄jo Classic

The Rose of Versailles reboot film was initially announced in September 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the publication of the original manga created by Riyoko Ikeda, which ran in Shueisha’s shо̄jo magazine Margaret from 1972 to 1973, inspired a television anime which ran for 40 episodes from 1979 to 1980, a live-action film directed by Jacques Demy in 1979, as well as a series of musical productions by the Takarazuka Revue since 1974.

The story, which is set in the years leading up to the French Revolution, follows a young woman named Oscar François de Jarjeyes, who was raised as a son by her father and is the commander of Marie Antoinette’s palace guard, and comes to learn quite intimately about the deception of France’s last monarchy in the face of the opulence and luxury of King Louis XIV’s court at Versailles. The story emerged at a critical juncture in the development of shо̄jo manga in the late 1960s, an era marked by more complex narratives with specific thematic focus on politics and sexuality. The Rose of Versailles is a crucial title in the development of shojo manga as we know it, and pivotal to the shift of shojo manga from being aimed at children to being aimed at adolescents and young adults.

The Rose of Versailles” is a masterpiece that has been loved by people all over the world for over half a century. I am deeply honored to be in charge of writing the lyrics and music for the theme song “Versailles” for the anime film version of “The Rose of Versailles.” I was deeply moved by the courage, pure love, and the fragile fate hidden in the strength of the characters who live through turbulent times. I have put our heart and soul into every note and word to express their feelings in music. I hope that fans will enjoy the music as well as the film, as it adds another page to this timeless masterpiece.
