Square Enix has dropped the first Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth patch notes for the PC version of the game, specifically aimed at improving stability. The new Steam and Epic Games Store releases of Rebirth might look even prettier than the RPG did on PS5, but after spending a lot of time with the game I did notice a few cracks. Rebirth has some performance issues in the large open-world areas and the visuals can struggle to keep up with the game itself, so hopefully this patch remedies these problems.
The aptly named Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC patch 1.001 is here, as Square Enix makes some changes to the game’s overall stability. While my FF7 Rebirth review made me fall in love with the characters all over again, I did have problems with how the game ran on my rig. On the whole, the RPG looks better than ever, but I was plagued by crashes and frame rate drops in the open-world sections, with some textures looking pretty washed out.
Square Enix’s first patch will, hopefully, fix some of this. Overall stability has been improved, so darting about the grasslands on the back of a Chocobo should (with any luck) stop bricking the entire game. The anti-aliasing method will now default to DLSS on supported PCs as well, so if you own an Nvidia GPU the game will boot up looking nicer than ever. We’ve brought together all the best graphics cards if you’re looking for something new to help you get the most out of Rebirth.
That’s not all, as playing Rebirth on the Steam Deck will look better, too. Square Enix has stopped the game’s graphics preset defaulting to ‘Low’ on the first Steam Deck launch, so new players won’t start their adventure wondering why Cloud looks like a potato and Sephiroth like a pale cucumber. The DirectStorage DLL has also been improved, so you might see less stuttering while playing.
On the whole, FF7 Rebirth should be better than at launch, so now’s the time to jump in if you’ve been having trouble. Many of us already have been playing, though, as Rebirth is eclipsing the concurrent player count for FF7 Remake on Steam. In fact, Rebirth has the highest numbers of any single-player Final Fantasy game on Valve’s platform.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is 30% off on Steam until Wednesday February 5, so you can expect to pay $48.99 / £45.49 until then. Just head here.
