Leaks and rumors about a remake of Resident Evil Zero have been a huge point of discussion within the franchise’s fan base. Originally released back in 2022, Resident Evil Zero served as a prequel to the entire series, and while it has its problems, the prospect of seeing it in a new light is exciting. Unfortunately, Capcom has yet to announce such a remake, so all discussion of the project remains a rumor until officially confirmed by developers.
However, this entry in the series may be one of the most deserving of the remake treatment. Resident Evil Zero has made its way to the news once again, as prominent leaker Dusk Golem recently stated that the game is “still very much in production.” While exciting, this should be taken with a grain of salt until Capcom addresses the supposed project. There are several Resident Evil games that could benefit from a fresh coat of paint, but Resident Evil Zero boasts a compelling prequel concept that, unfortunately, never reached its full potential.

RE0 Has A Strong Opening That Gets Derailed
The opening of Resident Evil Zero remains an iconic moment in the series, even with its divisive nature. The Ecliptic Express, an Umbrella-owned train, is attacked by a swarm of leeches that are infected with the infamous T-Virus. S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and death row inmate Billy Coen stumble upon the infected train, kickstarting a strong introduction. However, a big criticism is that the story begins to falter after such an interesting opening. So, not only could a Resident Evil Zero remake fix its story mistakes, it could elevate an opening sequence that is already regarded as a strong point in the game.
Leaks and rumors have also suggested that Resident Evil – Code: Veronica could be getting a remake.
Bringing Resident Evil’s Body Horror to New Heights
Through the years, the grotesque imagery of the Resident Evil franchise has clearly improved, especially in this most recent era. RE7 showcased some downright disgusting mutations with the Baker family, while Village scared the pants off almost every player during the giant baby sequence in House Beneviento.
One of the main villains players run into in Resident Evil Zero is Mimicry Marcus. The aforementioned leeches will slither together to form a warped version of James Marcus. When playing now, Mimicry Marcus isn’t the most terrifying enemy, especially after seeing the horrors RE7 and Village brought to life. However, remaking the likes of Mimicry Marcus with the graphics and details that helped make RE7 and Village so terrifying could help craft something truly atrocious.

Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen Are an Underrated Duo
As of now, Resident Evil Zero is the only Rebecca-led game. Of course, she has appeared throughout the series, but she’s a strong character that could benefit from a revisit, especially with Billy Coen at her side. What first starts off as an uneasy alliance quickly becomes a solid partnership, and a more modern take on the dynamic of this duo could help the story move along better. Resident Evil has featured some of the most iconic duos in gaming, but Rebecca’s prodigy status and Billy Coen’s backstory of being framed for murder creates a unique dynamic that still holds untapped potential.

The long legacy of Resident Evil has offered tons of scares and stories filled with corporate corruption. With Capcom releasing new chapters in tandem with remakes of beloved entries, a fresh take on Resident Evil Zero feels inevitable. Of course, only time will tell, but there is a strong case for putting Resident Evil Zero next in line.

Throughout the game, you will take control of both Rebecca and Billy, at times switching between both characters in order to proceed. Learning the advantages of each character is the key to solving puzzles and surviving the nightmares that lie ahead.
