The Last of Us Season 2 is one of the most-anticipated series of the year, particularly as the series prepares to introduce several new characters. Some characters will be familiar to game players, like Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, but Catherine O’Hara’s new role remains a complete mystery.
HBO adapted Naughty Dog’s first game into a series of hit television in 2023, with The Last of Us going on to secure several Emmy nominations (and some wins). The second season is possibly even more anticipated as it will tell the story of The Last of Us Part 2, a much more ambitious, dark, and emotional story. Taking place five years after the events of the first series, The Last of Us Season 2 will introduce audiences to Isabela Merced’s Dina, Young Mazino’s Jesse, and Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac, alongside returning cast members Pedro Pascal (Joel), Bella Ramsey (Ellie) and Gabriel Luna (Tommy).

Catherine O’Hara Shares New Details on The Last of Us Role
Catherine O’Hara was cast in The Last of Us Season 2 without any details about her character. Initial trailers revealed her to be some kind of therapist in the Jackson settlement, who shares scenes opposite Joel. As there is no direct counterpart for this character in the game, many fans are scratching their heads over how O’Hara’s character will be involved.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, O’Hara revealed her character has “edge” and maintains an interesting relationship with Pascal’s character. “I have an odd relationship with Pedro’s character. You don’t quite know why she’s got…well, she’s got this edge to her, but it makes for some weird, good dark comedy, I think,” she said. O’Hara added that her highlight during filming of The Last of Us Season 2 was working with Pascal and Ramsey. “Was that intimidating? It always is. It’s not my territory… You’re just like, thank you for inviting me and I’ll try to be a good guest. But they were very kind to me and it was great,” she said.

O’Hara’s comments do seem to lend themselves to the idea that she’ll play some kind of psychologist in the series, potentially helping Joel to unpack his trauma from the first season and his relationship with his adoptive daughter, Ellie, which is put under strain in the second game. However, her hints at an “odd” relationship may indicate something more between the characters. In older versions of The Last of Us Part 2 it was revealed that there were plans for Joel to have a relationship with a woman after settling in Jackson. This never fully came to light in the game, but the series may offer the chance to explore those avenues in more depth, similar to the way Season 1 expanded the relationship between Bill and Frank.
Fans don’t have long to wait to find out as the most recent teaser for The Last of Us confirmed an April release window for the series. Rumors also point to Season 3 of The Last of Us moving into production shortly, which indicates that fans may not have to wait too long between seasons.
The Last of Us Season 2 will be released on Max in April.
