Summary
- An ESRB rating suggests Resident Evil 6 could be making a comeback.
- The rating points to RE6 coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X.
- The game is already technically playable on the consoles through backward compatibility.
It seems as though Resident Evil 6, the lowest-rated main series Resident Evil game, is making a comeback on modern platforms. Resident Evil 6 first launched in 2012 and was widely panned by fans and critics alike. While there are those who enjoy some aspects of Resident Evil 6, with Leon’s campaign in particular earning praise, there are many others who have criticized it for being bloated and straying too far from what made the survival-horror franchise popular in the first place.
Resident Evil 6 was a commercial success despite its bad reviews, with Capcom eventually bringing the game to other platforms, like the PS4, Xbox One, and most recently, the Nintendo Switch. Resident Evil 6 is playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X thanks to the consoles’ backward compatibility, but now it seems that it may be getting a native release on the newer platforms as well.

Resident Evil 6 Gets a PS1-Style Demake
A Resident Evil fan has created a PSX-era demake of Resident Evil 6, showing off some menus and assets, as well as a gameplay trailer.
An ESRB rating spotted by VGC suggests that Resident Evil 6 is coming to Xbox Series X/S consoles. And unless Capcom has suddenly decided to make Resident Evil 6 an Xbox console exclusive when it comes to the latest systems, a PS5 version is most likely in the works as well. Presumably, the native Xbox Series X/PS5 versions of Resident Evil 6 will be mostly identical to other versions of the game, though it’s possible there will be performance enhancements of some kind. Since Resident Evil 6 is already available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility, some may be questioning why such a port is necessary, so maybe Capcom will do something else to help sweeten the pot.
Resident Evil 6 Has a New ESRB Rating
A Resident Evil 6 remaster for PS5 and Xbox Series X isn’t likely to drum up much excitement among fans, but the timing of this ESRB rating is interesting. It comes mere days before the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23, where a new entry in a Japanese IP with decades of history is expected to be showcased. There have been no hints that the mystery game at the Xbox Developer Direct is Resident Evil or even made by Capcom, so fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, though it’s still a possibility. Perhaps the announcement of a new Resident Evil 6 PS5/Xbox Series X port will be coupled with the reveal of the next game in the series, but again, it’s best to keep one’s expectations in check. The more likely scenario is that the mystery game has something to do with Square Enix, since the Final Fantasy 16 Xbox port has been teased to be at the show.
As far as the future of Resident Evil goes, it’s been suggested by reliable leakers that two Resident Evil remakes are currently in development: one for Code Veronica, and one for Zero. Not only that, but Resident Evil 9 is believed to be nearing the end of its development cycle, with the expectation that it will launch in 2025 or 2026. As it stands, Capcom has not officially announced any of these Resident Evil projects, so fans should keep that in mind.
