Summary
- EA shuts down online services for Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.
- Fans are informed in advance about game shutdown dates, with a list detailing each title affected.
- 12 more EA games are confirmed to be shutting down later this year.
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour has shut down its online services, marking yet another EA game that no longer has online functionality. EA shuts down the online services for multiple games every year. And while this is certainly disappointing, especially for those interested in video game preservation, it at least lets fans know well in advance before it shuts anything down.
EA keeps a running list of games it’s shutting down, updating fans regularly on the exact dates that titles will no longer have online support. Many of the games on its list are sports games, but it occasionally shuts down the online support for its other types of games as well. In any case, this running list has let fans know for months that they would lose access to Rory McIlroy PGA Tour‘s online modes, and that’s exactly what’s happened.

13 EA Games Are Confirmed to Be Shutting Down in 2025 So Far
At least 13 games published by EA will be shutting down throughout 2025.
As of Thursday, January 16, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour‘s online functionality no longer works. The golf game, first released in 2015, earned mixed reviews at the time of its launch, but with so few golf game options available on modern consoles, it was still a go-to for some fans of the sport. Its offline modes will still be accessible, but its online is dead, rendering certain content completely unavailable.

Unfortunately, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to EA games shutting down in 2025. The Simpsons: Tapped Out is shutting down on January 24, while seven other mobile games are getting the boot on January 29. Unlike Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, which still has some functionality post-shutdown, the mobile games EA is sunsetting will be lost to the void.
Understandably, this has caused some controversy. While most of the EA mobile games shutting down in January 2025 are not particularly popular, The Simpsons: Tapped Out has a large following of dedicated fans who are devastated that the game is shutting down. A Simpsons: Tapped Out petition was made in an effort to save the game somehow, but EA has not responded to it.
More EA games are shutting down later in the year. UFC 3 is shutting down on February 17, followed by EA Sports UFC Mobile 2 on March 13. NCAA 14 is getting the boot on March 13, and finally, Madden NFL 21 is shutting down on June 30. It’s entirely possible even more EA games will shut down in 2025, but these are what’s been confirmed so far, with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour being the first shut down this year.
