Anime has produced a compelling cadre of colourful characters over the years, from powerful god-defeating heroes to those who can manipulate time. At times, villains capture the imagination more than the hero of the story, and what could be more intriguing than doctors who use their gifts for evil?

With access to your personal information, doctors are meant to be individuals you can trust. However, these doctors go beyond the limits of science to achieve the extraordinary, but at the cost of innocent lives. From dabbling in inhuman experiments to creating abominations, here are the doctors who did not hesitate to break the Hippocratic Oath.

The Gold-Toothed Doctor

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Despite possessing superb mental faculties and being brilliant in his field, The Gold-Toothed Doctor has no moral regard for his fellow human beings. Only known by his epithet ‘The Gold-Toothed Doctor’, he is an extremely prideful man committed to carrying out the show’s main antagonist, Father’s, wishes.

He was one of those responsible for the creation of the Homunculus Wrath and in the show, repeatedly asked Roy Mustang to undergo Human Transmutation. In a twist of fate, he misjudged his importance to Wrath and the other Homunculi and was used as a ritual sacrifice for Human Transmutation.

Akihiro Kanou

Tokyo Ghoul

A man who defines medical malpractice to a tee, Akihiro Kanou’s evil intentions surprised everyone. Initially, Kanou was considered a well-respected and seemingly dignified physician, but his outward professional facade hid a deranged mind.

It was later revealed that Kanou had been experimenting on his others without their knowledge and consent. Kanou believed that ghouls were superior beings, and as a result, performed multiple torturous experiments for the sake of his ghoulification surgery. He was responsible for Kaneki Ken’s transformation into a Ghoul, transplanting a ghoul’s organ into him and changing him forever.

Dr Stylish

Akame Ga Kill!

If you can’t tell already by his name, Dr Stylish was a flamboyant, dramatic doctor and a member of the Jaegers. Like all other doctors on this list, Stylish is proud of his work, which sees him experiment and produce his own biologically enhanced army he dubbed Team Stylish.

Stylish pays no mind to the well-being of others and is willing to do anything to achieve success in his experiments. Despite his sheer skill and proficiency in biological engineering and transformation, his escape was foiled and he was stopped by Akame and his allies.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Usually, when someone dreams of becoming a doctor, they’ll tell you they’re doing it to save others. In Cioccolata’s case, however, he was doing it for all the wrong reasons. A serial killer disguised as a doctor, Cioccolata first started in a care home, driving several elderly residents to kill themselves after mentally torturing them.

After becoming a certified doctor, Cioccolata began his killing spree, purposely performing surgery on healthy patients while conscious just to watch them die slowly. Alongside his accomplice, Secco, he uses his skill and standing to inflict a reign of terror as a member of Passione.

Doctor Hogback

One Piece

Cunning and proficient in his craft, Doctor Hogback – also known by his moniker ‘Genius Surgeon’ – readily joined the villainous Gecko Moria and his Thriller Back Pirates in their goal to raise a zombie army. Before joining, Hogback was a skilled doctor who did not enjoy his day-to-day work, viewing his patients as moneybags rather than his solemn duty as a medical practitioner.

Although he viewed Moria’s power and goal as the peak of science, he also joined because he wished to bring his love interest, Victoria Cindry, back from the dead. Despite proclaiming affection for Cindry, his fondness for her was superficial, and he did not regard the lives of his creations too highly either.

Mori Ougai

Bungo Stray Dogs

Ruthless, efficient and extremely intelligent, Mori Ougai was once an underground doctor, serving as a military physician during the Great War. He forced his protege, Yosano Akiko, to repeatedly use her Healing Ability on injured soldiers in order to send them back to the front, uncaring of the cycle of torture for all involved.

After the war, he served as a doctor for the Port Mafia Boss, only to murder said boss to rise in his place and use his new protege, Dazai Osamu, as a witness to bolster his ascension. Despite his cruelty, all of Mori’s decisions were intended to advance the Port Mafia and protect the city of Yokohama from all threats. In short, he could be seen as a necessary evil, the complete opposite of President Fukuzawa Yukichi’s character.

Hellsing

One of the most iconic characters of the Hellsing series, the man simply known as The Doctor is the definition of a mad scientist. Utterly loyal to The Major and the Millenium’s goals, the Doctor was extremely interested in creating vampires, dabbling in inhumane experiments in his bid to create Artificial Vampires.

A twisted individual with a love for bloodshed and violence, the Doctor took great pride in his work and always strived for perfection. Despite his respect and fidelity to The Major, the Doctor chose to prioritise his work when the walls began to close in. However, he was ultimately stopped and killed by his mortal enemy, Walter Dornez.

Dr Garaki Kyudai

My Hero Academia

On the surface, Dr Garaki Kyudai is a respectable figure in his field, the chairman of Jaku General Hospital and a generous man who’d begun numerous charities. As a seemingly Quirkless man, Garaki appears harmless to others. However, the reality is far from rosy.

In truth, Dr Garaki is in cahoots with All For One, the worst Villain the world has ever seen. He was demented enough to kidnap and fuse living people and their Quirks to create mindless Nomus and dozens of other human experiments, including Gigantomachia, Shirakumo Oboro and Shigaraki Tomura. The man is completely loyal to All For One, even giving up his Life Force Quirk to him and making do with a duplicated version of his Quirk.
