Games Workshop published a half-year report where it expressed “more confidence” in the upcoming adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 by Amazon and Henry Cavill.
“On 10 December 2024, we announced the conclusion of our negotiations with Amazon for the adaption of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe into films and television series, together with associated merchandising rights. We are now more confident we will bring the worlds of Warhammer to the screen like you have never seen before,” the report reads.
Amazon & Games Workshop Have Struck A Deal
Clearing the bar of “never seen before” isn’t particularly difficult for Warhammer 40,000, which has never had a television series before and has only had a single movie. Ultramarines (2010) reviewed poorly and is widely considered to be a flop. With the budget available to Amazon, you’d expect the upcoming adaptation to be the best one ever by default.
Although Amazon MGM Studios acquired the global rights to adapt Warhammer 40,000 series and films over two years ago, there hadn’t been movement on any projects until last month when the two companies agreed on a creative direction for an initial television series. Henry Cavill, a long-time fan of Warhammer, is set to star in and executive produce the project. Amazon MGM has yet to name a showrunner, however.
The report also highlights the success of Space Marine 2 but stresses caution about the unpredictable nature of commercial success in the video game industry: “We recognise that successes like these for Warhammer are not a given in the world of video games. Clearly, we are looking for the next one. We remain cautious when forecasting royalty income.”
Following the announcement of an agreement between Amazon and Games Workshop, Cavill provided his own update on the project in a recent Instagram post: “My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world,” he begins. “Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe, which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though—more to come in time!”
As the executives have only now agreed on a concept, it will likely be some time before we see anything concrete about the upcoming show.
