The War Of The Rohirrim Canon?

The War Of The Rohirrim Canon?

Tolkien crafted what could be considered one of the largest and most comprehensive worlds to ever grace fantasy. Of course, it’s not so comprehensive that others cannot take what has been made and craft their own creative interpretations of what happened.

The Lord Of The Rings Timeline, Explained

There’s a lot more than just Bilbo and Frodo’s adventures in The Lord of the Rings.

This is why, whenever a new piece of media based in Middle Earth comes out, people tend to question whether or not it’s actually canon to the history of Middle Earth. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, set in Lord of the Rings’s history, is no exception to the question of whether or not it’s canon.

Yes, Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim Is Canon

There should probably be a “technically” thrown on the beginning of the sentiment “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is canon” because Tolkien isn’t alive to confirm or deny. However, based on the lore that he did leave behind in the Lord of the Rings, in the Silmarillion, and in the Unfinished Tales, Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is not entirely off base from pre-existing canon lore.

The Rohirrim and the Riders of Rohan do make appearances in Lord of the Rings, but their best outlining stems from Appendix A, and briefly in Appendix B, in Return of the King. These outlines are not super substantial, however, which is actually to the benefit of the creators because it gives them a lot more creative freedom to work with. As confirmed by Jason DeMarco a few years back, the creators attempted to keep it as close to the source material (albeit as little as there was) as possible.

As far as we can tell, the events that take place within The War of the Rohirrim doesn’t conflict or contradict any other parts of the greater LotR story, either.
