Star Wars might be taking on an adaptation nearly six years after it was originally mentioned to be on the table, and it’s a split about whether or not this exciting project could be a great thing for fans or a panic button signaling low confidence in the franchise’s contemporary projects.
Star Wars has seen a lot of projects announced before proceeding to vanish with the wind, a trend that’s twice as infuriating for fans in light of how much lore was relegated to the Legends continuity when Disney acquired the IP and set about creating a new canon. While the company launched right into a sequel trilogy and even went on to create a slew of shows for Disney+, these have been a drop in the bucket when compared to what already existed and what fans expect to be replaced. For better or worse, Lucasfilm seems more intentional about this expansion of late, kicking off expansive plans for more lore-giving projects. While fans already know what to expect from Star Wars movies & series in 2025, there seem to be more interesting things brewing down the line.

When star Manny Jacinto confirmed the full scope of Leslie Headland’s original plans for The Acolyte, fans were understandably worried that the show’s divisive nature might have cost the franchise a more comprehensive opportunity to take on the Old Republic-era lore that’s been missing since the creation of the new canon and Legends. Fortunately, this won’t be the case, as was revealed by Daniel Richtman on Patreon, who explicitly stated that “Lucasfilm is developing a show set during the Knights of the Old Republic era.” This news comes as a surprise to many, as this would seem to be the project that Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy alluded to in a 2019 appearance, never to be brought up again since. While this could just be a highly well-thought-out concept finally moving from the drawing board to the production room, it could also be a sign that Star Wars is desperately reaching for a surefire crowd-pleaser.

While he did mention that a show would do a better job of representing this vast lore in the Reddit AMA where he made the statements, the bottom line seemed to be that he wasn’t fired up about any adaptation at all. In addition to misgivings about adapting yet another fan-favorite entry in the franchise to potentially horrid results, there’s also the issue of priorities. The rollout and rumors of High Republic/Old Republic content seem to indicate that there’s a loss of confidence in moving the franchise forward. Little else has been heard about Daisy Ridley’s rumored return to the big screen as Rey Palpatine, and the shine around The Mandalorian & Grogu has taken a few hits since the project was first announced. It’s telling that the only Star Wars project that seems to be entirely on course is Dawn of the Jedi.
Despite the seemingly overwhelming ratio of pre-prequel era content to modern, current storylines, there might still be hope. The Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cast has been rumored to return in Dave Filoni’s movie, and other signs seem to also point to a push for more content in that direction. With that in mind, there’s a chance that Lucasfilm hasn’t given up hope in furthering the franchise’s present timeline. If the company can find the right balance, then fans can enjoy forays into the past without worrying about where the franchise is headed overall.
