Hogwarts Mystery Proves Hogwarts Legacy 2 Can Have a Risky Setting

With rumors of a Hogwarts Legacy sequel circling, many may be wondering how this new installment will compare to its predecessor. There are many changes that Avalanche Software could make in order to shake things up, but Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has set a precedent for a particularly bold approach. Specifically, the next Hogwarts Legacy game could change its location.

One might think that the “Hogwarts” in the title of both games would make them exempt from traveling to locations outside the titular magical school and its surrounding grounds, like Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest. However, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has managed to go beyond its titular locale, a trick Avalanche’s next big game could consider borrowing.

There have been a lot of rumors surrounding Hogwarts Legacy 2’s potential structure, and there’s a way it can keep both fans and Warner Bros. happy.

Hogwarts Mystery Takes Wizards Abroad

Though Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery may not have grabbed the public consciousness as much as Hogwarts Legacy, the mobile game has maintained a steady player base and features a unique story. Like Hogwarts Legacy, Hogwarts Mystery’s lore takes place outside the timeline of the Harry Potter books and the Fantastic Beast series. This puts the two games in the same boat, leaving them space to experiment in the same ways.

Therefore, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery’s new chapter could easily inspire expansions in Hogwarts Legacy. This new chapter of the mobile game takes players to Egypt following the completion of seven years of study at Hogwarts. Players team up with Bill Weasley, who canonically is a Curse-Breaker in Egypt, and Goblet of Fire favorite Cedric Diggory to solve a case. The Egypt expansion is a perfect example of Hogwarts Mystery taking an existing part of the Harry Potter franchise’s lore and rearranging it for its own narrative purposes.

Hogwarts Legacy obviously does not have to follow the exact same steps as Hogwarts Mystery. A key difference between the two games are their timelines, as Hogwarts Mystery takes place only a few years before the Harry Potter franchise in comparison to Hogwarts Legacy’s century. This means that Hogwarts Legacy would have to choose its new location wisely, but that does not mean journeying far from the castle is something to avoid.

Hogwarts Legacy Leaves the Hogwarts Grounds

As mentioned previously, Hogwarts Legacy tends to stick to the Hogwarts grounds and its surrounding areas of the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade. However, like Hogwarts Mystery, the game could place players in other locations mentioned in the Harry Potter franchise outside the Hogwarts grounds.

One of the best ways to do this would be by capitalizing on nostalgia. Universal Studios has successfully capitalized on the nostalgia of Potterheads by selling merchandise based on the franchise, like wands, sweets, and clothing. This is all thanks to an area themed to Diagon Alley, the central hub and shopping district of the British wizarding world.

Players that have always wanted to experience the magic of Diagon Alley for themselves would surely enjoy seeing the shopping district featured in the next Hogwarts Legacy. After all, Avalanche Software could put their own twist on the area considering the game’s timeline. Ollivander’s, the main wand shop, was founded in 382 B.C., meaning it would be standing in Diagon Alley even in Hogwarts Legacy’s time period. Plus, a smaller Ollivander’s location is present in Hogwarts Legacy in Hogsmeade. Diagon Alley could give players new perspectives on famous shops like Ollivander’s.

Pureblood History Could Add More Locations

With Phineas Nigellus Black leading the way as headmaster of Hogwarts in Hogwarts Legacy, there is room for Avalanche Software to explore 12 Grimmauld Place, the ancestral home of the Blacks in London. This location eventually houses the Order of the Phoenix and is, at one point, home to Harry Potter. Since Grimmauld Place has such a rich history, it only makes sense for houses like this specific location or the homes of other longstanding pureblood families to be explored in Hogwarts Legacy. Properly exploring Azkaban prison is another opportunity, as it only makes a very brief cameo in the original game. Additionally, going to new schools like Uagadou could completely change the experience, offering a fresh hub area with new lore and architecture as opposed to the wildly familiar Hogwarts castle.
