With Hades 2 now in early access, players have been experimenting with the game’s starting weapons, and have found that some are better than others.

Although Hades 2 is clearly reverent towards its predecessor, the Supergiant developer team have stated and displayed an active initiative to differentiate the two, which can be clearly seen within the storyline and gameplay, even during this incomplete phase. This list will look at certain seemingly incomplete events, which further updates may deliver on.

Awakening Hypnos

Currently in a Coma

Hades 2 - Talking to Hypnos

Hypnos was known for dozing off in Hades, being characterized as a lazy, albeit comical presence who greets shades in the House of Hades, along with Zagreus, whenever he dies. Although he tended to slack on the job, he frequently interacted with Zagreus, who was capable of performing tasks for him.

He is the only Cthtonic God seen thus far who was both present in the first game and safely retrieved from the House of Hades. Hecate said she carried him to the Crossroads simply “because he was there” when she arrived. Unfortunately, he has been in a sleep-induced coma for a while, and Melinoë has yet to properly interact with him, as a result. This has led to Melinoë putting him on a high pedestal, as the only God from her missing past by her side, who is no more capable of communication. Even a gift of nectar only makes him sleeptalk part of his greeting to the House of Hades, and will not advance his friendship. As the story continues, Hypnos will likely be awakened once more, possibly having comical banter with Melinoë as he did her brother. For now, the most one gets is Hypnos’ muddled mumblings in the one dream vapor event, but the way the event seems geared towards awakening him specifically implies it may be the key.

Romance…?

A Noted Aspect Of The First Game

Icarus, Eris, and Dora, three characters who could possibly be Melinoë's lovers in a potential romance update

Romantic relationships were a part of Hades that could be carefully cultivated, evolving from friendships with other residents of the House of Hades. Zagreus could notably become involved with Thanatos, Megaera, and Dusa (platonically), possibly even all three at once. As Hades 2 is still in development, this aspect has not been confirmed yet, but will likely return in a similar manner, with fans discussing potential candidates with various forms of reasoning.

Some ideas for potential partners include Icarus; a longtime friend of Melinoë, who has an attraction to her, Dora; a shade who forgot her mortal life (all but confirmed to have been Pandora, the woman who inadvertently unleashed misfortune upon the human race) and acts as Melinoë’s unofficial roommate, and Eris; a goddess of strife who secretly hates her role, but enjoys spending time with Melinoë, even if only to torment her. Other potential candidates also exist, such as Moros and Artemis, but as of now, no one can really say for sure who will be romanceable if the function is introduced.

Finding the Fates

A Plea For Help

Melinoë discussing Chronos and his efforts to influence the Fates

The Fates are a notable but ultimately unseen trio of godly sisters in Hades, whose predictions aided Zagreus in his efforts to mend the rift between the Olympic and Cthtonic Gods. Their aid comes in the form of the Fated List of Minor Prophecies, a document which subsequently updates as new events are foretold. In exchange for fulfilling said events, Zagreus reaps rewards, in the form of many beneficial items.

Through their liason and brother, Moros (the embodiment of doom), they interact with Melinoë in Hades 2, and grant her the list, which she can view in the Crossroads. Like her brother, the list updates and allows her to gain rewards once the prophecies come true. Moros discusses Zagreus and his prior use of the list with Melinoë, who mentions how he made use of it acheive his own goals. It is clear Melinoë hopes to be aided by the Fates in her own quest for family as well.

However, there is another odd entry in the list, which is identified as “no prophecy, merely a plea.” In this section, titled “Melinoë, Help Us”, the Fates speak with her directly, apparently in need of her assistance. Freeing them is not a task thus far, but is continually remarked upon that Chronos has them held captive. A future update will likely allow them to gain their freedom, if not let Melinoë interact with them directly.

Aiding Arachne

The Gift And The Curse

Hades 2 - Arachne

Arachne is a spider who comes from perhaps one of the best known Greek Myths. She proclaimed herself a better weaver than Athena, due to her own skill with the craft, which prompted the goddess to compete with her. Athena cursed her to become a spider, to punish the weaver for her arrogance. In Hades 2, she is portrayed as a friend of Melinoë who can outfit her with dresses which give her various boons. Arachne maintains a hatred of the Olympic Gods, and becomes conflicted upon discovering Melinoë’s relation to them, although she ultimately decides to stay friends with her.

It is possible a future update could provide some level of resolution to this conflict. Zagreus notably gained favor with Hades in an effort to relieve certain friends of their burdens. This included seeking lenience for the likes of Sisyphus, Orpheus, and Achilles. Zagreus was notably discouraged from pursuing these efforts for a time, but can eventually succeed in relieving the burdens of Sisyphus, and uniting Orpheus and Achilles with their respective lovers. Although Melinoë may be told Arachne’s fate is not her cross to bear, she may decide otherwise.

The Family Reunion

Gods Reunited

hades-2-family-portrait

Like Zagreus before her, Melinoë, the protagonist of Hades 2, is a child of Hades and Persephone. Unlike her older brother, Melinoë has little personal experience with her immediate family. This comes as a result of Chronos seizing power from the Cthtonic Gods, and the resulting banishment of most of them. Hecate, the Goddess of Witchcraft, took a baby Melinoë and Hypnos to The Crossroads, an area between the surface and the Underworld where refugees from the latter location congregate to overthrow Chronos.

Although Melinoë is a student of Hecate, who reveres her teacher deeply, and shares a mutual affection with her, she does ultimately pine for her birth family. In her quarters lies an unfinished portrait of Melinoë, roughly after her birth, cradled lovingly by her parents and Zagreus. This portrait can be viewed whenever she is in The Crossroads, and she will comment frequently on a desire to reunite with her family when interacting with it. Melinoë is able to briefly encounter her father in Tartarus, alongside Cerberus, who is treated like a family pet, and it is likely she will meet her brother and mother, at least as an aside, if the story moves forward.

Another possible reunion could be that of Nyx, Goddess of Night, with some of her children. It is less directly teased, but her presence and its impact is alluded to by multiple other Gods whom Melinoë is affiliated with, most notably Nemesis, who vocally dislikes her mother due to her distant style of parenting. This is both perhaps a reflection of how Chaos raised her (or more accurately, didn’t raise her) and a contrast to her presence in Hades as a loving surrogate mother to Zagreus, in Persephone’s absence. It is notable that Hecate, Melinoë’s own mother substitute, is also colder towards Nemesis. However, for the time being, this is mere speculation.
