Why Resident Evil Fans Should Consider Giving Black Ops 6 Zombies a Look

The latest entry in the venerable Call of Duty series, Black Ops 6 serves as a major revitalization for the franchise’s typical formula. Between its reinvigorating campaign that’s among the most varied in the franchise to date, along with solid changes to the multiplayer gameplay, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 serves as a phenomenal bounceback from a rough entry in 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Being the first title in the franchise released since Microsoft’s acquisition of publisher Activision, it feels like this new game sets a nice groundwork for future entries to follow.

One other major area of improvement for Black Ops 6 has been in the form of the Zombies mode. Where Modern Warfare 3 opted for an open-world Zombies mode, Black Ops 6 takes players back to the classic round-based gameplay format that made this mode so popular in its formative days. The changes to Zombies may also be worth jumping into for fans of another zombie-based video game franchise, Resident Evil.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies has made some excellent gameplay strides since release, although one big issue is still holding the mode back.

Black Ops 6 Zombies Is A Perfect Holdover For Resident Evil Fans

Black Ops 6’s Third-Person Option Is Reminiscent Of Resident Evil

A major change that Black Ops 6 makes that should be familiar to Resident Evil fans is the ability to change the view to third-person in Zombies mode. It’s far from the first time Call of Duty has experimented with third-person gameplay, but it continues a tradition set in Modern Warfare 3 where a third-person view can specifically be used in the Zombies mode. Combined with the game’s new omnidirectional movement, it makes for one of Call of Duty’s most unique gameplay styles yet.

What it also does is make Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode feel like a classic Resident Evil game in and of itself. Up until the most recent entries, Resident Evil has long existed as a third-person horror game, even innovating in a big way in that area with 2005’s Resident Evil 4. Call of Duty’s Zombies mode offering a third-person viewpoint is a satisfying combination of styles that should satiate Resident Evil fans while they wait for the franchise’s next entry.

Black Ops 6 Brings Resident Evil’s Puzzle Gameplay To The Forefront

Another way that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode hearkens back to Resident Evil is in its puzzle-focused gameplay. Beyond its zombie-killing action and horror gameplay, puzzle-solving has long been one of the biggest pillars of the Resident Evil series. Between story-based puzzles and side puzzles to earn collectibles, Resident Evil succeeds just as much for its sense of discovery as it does for its survival gameplay.

Across Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode, the maps are absolutely loaded with puzzles for players to solve. These puzzles help players to find Easter Eggs – one of the most prominent parts of the Zombies experience – to help unlock amazing rewards and even uncover pieces of the Zombies story. Putting all of this together, it feels like Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode was designed to pay homage to the success of the Resident Evil series.

Even Black Ops 6’s Campaign Throws Back To Resident Evil

Even beyond the Zombies mode, the Black Ops 6 campaign even has a mission called Emergence that takes a full-blown jump into horror. In the chapter, you explore an underground facility where, in a series of gas-induced hallucinations, the player character is forced to face off against undead creatures. Beyond being one of the campaign’s best missions, it’s also a very clear homage to Resident Evil, which makes it worth a try for hardcore fans of Capcom’s horror franchise.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a major return to form in several ways, most especially in its revitalization of the Zombies gameplay style. Combining all of its new and old elements together, this new iteration of Zombies feels tailor-made for the hardcore Resident Evil fan. While those fans wait patiently for Capcom’s next move with the franchise, Black Ops 6 could provide a zombie-killing fix for horror game fans.
