James Gunn Got Candid On The ‘Saddest’ Creature Commandos Episode

James Gunn got emotional as he opened up about one of the characters in the DC Universe. He admitted that he wrote about the innocent character in one episodes of Creature Commandos.

Creature Commandos is Gunn’s debut project in the DC Universe as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios. He wrote the script and contributed to the overall direction of the animated series. The series delivers a blend of horror, humor and action. In a recent interview, the filmmaker admitted that the “saddest” script he wrote in his entire life was part of the series.

In a recent interview, Gunn talked about one of the characters featured in Creature Commandos, Weasel, a humanoid anthropomorphic. He has a bizarre appearance with sharp claws, matted fur, and a wiry frame, giving him a comical look. He appears creepy and goofy. However, he was put in jail for allegedly killing 27 kids. Gunn stood up for him and showed why Weasel was innocent by exposing the actual events that occurred before his arrest in Creature Commandos Season 1, episode 4, “Chasing Squirrels.” When he wrote about the episode, the filmmaker got candid about how he felt for the character. “I get really sad talking about it,” Gunn shared, sounding emotional, per Variety. “I remember finishing [writing] it. I was in Colorado with my wife, and I remember I said, ‘I think I just wrote the saddest thing that I’ve ever written in my entire life.'”

Gunn introduced Weasel in the 2021 movie Suicide Squad. In the animated series, the fury beast appears from the woods and encounters a group of children. The kids are drawn to him due to his sweet nature and they play together. However, an old man sees them and suspects Weasel is a bad guy. So, he calls 911 and grabs a shotgun. Weasel and the kids continue playing and end up in the school’s boiler room. They accidentally strike a box of matches next to a box of dirty rags. The old man suddenly appears and begins shooting at Weasel, leading to the boiler’s explosion. The man and the other kids instantly die, except for one girl and Weasel. Weasel tries to save the girl, but two cops arrive and see him dragging the girl’s body. Weasel wants to take the girl to safety while being surrounded by the other kids’ bodies, but the cops assume the worst in him. “At the end of the day, [Weasel], in a lot of ways, is the most noble character in the show,” Gunn added. “This is a pretty innocent creature who is treated like something else because he looks different than other people.”

You will get what the Superman director is saying if you have watched the episode about Weasel’s backstory. But even if you haven’t seen it, the story of how Weasel ended up in jail based on the story above is heartbreaking. Gunn was right to say that Weasel was “the most notable character” because, after the said episode, you would never forget him. Weasel tried to help the only girl who survived even if the cops continued shooting him. In the end, they dragged him and left the girl helpless until the fire consumed her. Weasel was the only one who cared and didn’t want to leave the child. However, they didn’t see his efforts to save her; they succumbed to their misjudgment because Weasel looked different. To make matters worse, Weasel could not talk to defend himself, and his actions were taken against him. It’s so hard not to cry when you watch Weasel’s episode. Gunn’s heartbreak can be felt and seen in it.
