According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin is writing and directing the remake. For a while now, fans have wondered if original star Brendan Fraser would return, and many have praised the distinct tone and storytelling of the first movie. The Mummy was released in 1999 and Fraser starred as Rick O’Connell, a former captain who comes across the monster who everyone knows, loves, and fears. Fraser played Rick again in two sequels: The Mummy Returns which came out 2001 and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Maika Monroe is a beloved star known for horror movies such as Longlegs and It Follows, and she has set up her next film.
Cronin told The Hollywood Reporter that audience can expect a unique movie:
“This will be unlike any
Mummy
movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”
The remake is the third feature-length movie that Cronin is directing other than the 2023 remake Evil Dead Rise and the 2019 paranormal horror film The Hole in the Ground. Since he has worked in the horror genre, he’s the perfect filmmaker to take on The Mummy remake, and it will be great to see what he brings to the story. Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise was also a huge box office success. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evil Dead Rise grossed $146 million against a $19 million budget.
The Mummy remake will be released by New Line. Cronin’s company Doppelgängers, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster are producing the film. There are no story details right now. However, fans of the original The Mummy franchise can guess that, with Cronin penning the script and behind the camera, it will be much scarier and creepier than the 1999 film.
While Cronin said he would be happy to make other Evil Dead sequels, the filmmaker also told THR that he was thinking about his next project when the 2023 movie wrapped. He said:
“I put down other original ideas and original screenplays to go and make
Evil Dead Rise
. So it’s nice to be in this moment where I’m able to look around and think about what’s next.”
No matter what horror trends come and go, a monster film is always going to be a good and popular idea. There are many recent examples of this trope, from the Melissa Barrera movie Your Monster to the reboots from Universal Pictures. Since a mummy is such a classic fear-inducing character, it’s exciting to think about Cronin’s version. The Mummy remake has a release date of April 17th, 2026, and everyone will be more than a little curious to see what this new monster is like.
