Developer Niantic has announced Pokemon GO‘s New Year’s 2025 event, which will run from December 30 to January 1. In this Pokemon GO event players will be able to earn bonuses, encounter Pokemon more frequently, enjoy new rewards, and more.

Pokemon GO is a free-to-play augmented reality mobile game created by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. It started with about 150 Pokemon species, and by now Pokemon GO features around 870 Pokemon. The game has been downloaded over a billion times worldwide, making significant revenue. Now, Pokemon GO is holding a New Year’s event, offering exciting things for players.

Pokemon GO‘s New Year’s 2025 event gives players a chance to earn 2,025 XP for every Pokemon caught with an Excellent Throw. To match the celebration, the game will feature colorful fireworks lighting up the virtual skies. Additionally, several Pokemon GO species will appear more often in the wild, including Jigglypuff with a ribbon, Hoothoot in a New Year’s outfit, and Wurmple wearing a party hat. For shiny hunters, there will be a better chance of finding these costumed Pokemon in their shiny forms.



When is the Pokemon GO New Year’s 2025 event taking place?

  • Monday, December 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. to Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. local time.

Moreover, raids will offer special challenges and rewards for players. One-star raids will feature Pikachu wearing a snowflake beanie, while three-star raids will bring back popular costumed Pokemon like Raticate and Wobbuffet, both wearing party hats. For lucky players, shiny versions of these Pokemon will also be available. Trainers can also take on event-themed Field Research tasks to encounter costumed Pokemon and earn Stardust. The paid Timed Research comes with useful items like three Premium Battle Passes and gives players a chance to encounter festive Pokemon like Pikachu and Wobbuffet.


During the event, the game will also allow players to buy and gift tickets to friends they’ve reached the Great Friends level or higher. However, these ticket purchases are non-refundable, and players should try to use them before the event ends; otherwise, they would lose them. Another interesting part of the event is the PokeStop Showcases, where players can show off their event-themed Pokemon. Niantic is also offering a limited-time Ultra Holiday Box that includes a Pokemon Storage upgrade, an Item Bag upgrade, and 17 Rare Candies.

The New Year’s 2025 event announcement comes amidst the collaboration between Pokemon GO and McDonald’s, which is running from December 16 to December 22. This partnership gives players exclusive bonuses, including Lure Modules and Raid Battles at sponsored PokeStops and Gyms at participating McDonald’s locations across the United States. With all these exciting features, Pokemon GO players have a lot to look forward to.
