There are two things that otaku around the world love – Studio Ghibli and coffee. Now, those two things have come together to create a specialty blend of beans, perfect for people who want to curl up with a hot coffee and watch a beautiful Studio Ghibli movie. Considering cold weather has hit half the world now, that’s many people. The best news is that this new specialty coffee is available to purchase online.
This special blend of coffee beans used to be much more exclusive, and considerably harder to get. They were only served in one place in all of Japan, and if you were not in that exclusive café, you couldn’t enjoy them. Now that they are available online, they are easier to get, but only if you move quickly, because they sell out fast.

Studio Ghibli Coffee Beans
An Exclusive Blend of Coffee
This exclusive blend of coffee beans is called Straw Hat coffee. The coffee is named for the Straw Hat Cafe, which is located inside the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo. The café (and coffee beans) are not named for One Piece as you may have first guessed, but rather the iconic straw hat that Sophie wears in Howl’s Moving Castle, where she begins the story as a hatter. The Straw Hat Cafe is very hard to get inside, and often has huge queues.
One of the highlights of the menu at the Straw Hat Cafe is the Straw Hat coffee. This original blend was created exclusively for the Studio Ghibli Museum, and was crafted by a shop in Kyoto, Japan called Tamaya Coffee. Tamaya Coffee takes coffee roasting very seriously, doing all the roasting and blending of their beans themselves. This leads to a high quality of coffee to be used for pour-over coffee, one of Japan’s preferred ways to enjoy black coffee.
Paired with special food at the museum café, Straw Hat coffee has always been popular. Plus, the fact that it was so hard to get added to its popularity. Only those willing to wait for it were able to enjoy it – and that doesn’t even begin to describe the troubles of anyone who doesn’t live in Tokyo. Thanks to the coffee’s popularity, though, it is now available to order online.

How to Buy Studio Ghibli Coffee
Where to Get the Beans
Straw Hat coffee is now being sold on the Studio Ghibli Museum online store. It is sold in 200-gram (7-ounce) packs for 1,500 yen (US$10), and only as whole beans that you will need to grind yourself. The coffee beans come in a resealable paper bag with a straw hat sticker on it, which reads “麦わらぼうし” in Japanese. This can be read as “mugiwaraboshi,” and translates to straw hat.
There are a few things that you need to be aware of if you are planning to order Straw Hat coffee beans for yourself. Firstly, the website is entirely in Japanese, so if you are not confident about reading in Japanese, be sure to have a translation app ready. Secondly, as stated above, the Straw Hat coffee is extremely popular. It has been selling out very quickly when it is restocked online. If it is sold out when you try to purchase it, though, you can input your email address to get a notification for when it is available again.
As is true with many things, scarcity, and exclusivity make things extra popular. At least Straw Hat coffee probably doesn’t have to worry about scammers like some other exclusive goods do, but that doesn’t mean this blend of coffee is easy to get. However, it has gotten a little easier than it was before. A cozy time with your favorite Studio Ghibli movie and a hot cup of Straw Hat coffee may be within your reach after all.
