Capcom Wants to Revive More of Its Classic IPs

Following Capcom‘s announcements of new Okami and Onimusha titles at The Game Awards 2024, the publisher has stated it also wants to bring back some of its other legacy and dormant properties. In recent years, Capcom has been pushing for a lot of fan interest and engagement about what new titles from its storied legacy the company should bring back. These usually come in the form of surveys that fans can fill out, many of them asking about what new games or sequels they’d like to push for. Considering Capcom has a library of so many games that have yet to see new installments, it’s no surprise demand is high in that area.

Capcom recently announced the revivals of two dormant IPs at The Game Awards 2024 earlier this month. One of these was a new trailer for Onimusha Way of the Sword, a brand-new title in Capcom’s classic Onimusha series, a dark fantasy game that takes place in the Kyoto period, which is set to release in 2026. The other game is an Okami sequel, with Hideki Kamiya once again at the helm, though a release date hasn’t been set yet for it.

In one of The Game Awards 2024’s most shocking announcements, Okami is getting a sequel made by a revived Clover Studio.

In a post following these announcements at TGA 2024, Capcom revealed its plans to continue reviving its dormant IPs. It says that, in addition to regularly releasing new major titles annually, Capcom will focus on “re-activating” dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. This includes working to further enhance the company’s corporate value by leveraging the publisher’s rich library of content, reviving past Capcom IPs in the same style as the aforementioned Okami and Onimusha sequels.



There are several IPs that many fans want to see Capcom return to. Based on surveys from earlier this year, most fans want to see Dino Crisis return, a survival horror game based around dinosaurs in a similar style to Capcom’s own Resident Evil. Other IPs include the classic platformer/shooter franchise Mega Man, which was the face of Capcom back in the day before the publisher shifted gears. Darkstalkers, Breath of Fire, and the Vs. Capcom series were also in the top 10 in overall votes of franchises that fans wanted to see a new title for.

Another survey released after the release of the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster indicates that a Dead Rising 2 remaster is possibly already in the works. Since Capcom expressed its wholehearted commitment to creating new titles and reviving older franchises, along with Kamiya’s return as part of Clovers, fans are hoping that the publisher can bring back some of the studio’s older games, like God Hand and Viewtiful Joe.
