This article contains spoilers for
Oshi no Ko
.
Summary
- Fans were disappointed with Oshi no Ko’s ending, feeling it was rushed despite the author’s vision.
- The second novel, Futari no Etude, will delve into Kana and Akane’s past and future after the final chapter.
- The manga tackled complex themes like the idol industry but fell short of reader expectations.
Oshi no Ko dropped its final chapter a few days ago, sparking massive negative reactions from fans. The last volume will be released in a few days to be announced, and will likely include a few different things, but no major changes. Illustrator Mengo Yokoyari stated she had finished working on the volume when the final chapter was out.
Tackling complex subjects, like the whole idol industry, Oshi no Ko was not able to live up to the expectations readers had about it, despite its tragic ending (going down the My Hero Academia road of fans disliking the author’s choices).

Oshi no Ko: Kana and Akane’s Complicated Rivalry, Explained
The love triangle between Aqua, Akane, and Kana gets more complicated than you think when Akane’s true feelings about Kana are revealed.
The second Oshi no Ko novel, titled Futari no Etude, will be released on December 18, 2024. This novel focuses on Kana Arima and Akane Kurokawa, showing their past, but will also include an epilogue set after the final chapter. These two have a complex relationship in the manga, professionally and personally.
Kana and Akane’s Relationship
Kana Arima and Akane Kurokawa are rivals during the story. They’re both actresses competing for roles, but they also fall in love with Aqua (and Akane starts dating him later). Kana has been in the acting business since she was a child, and Akane actually used to idolize her and was inspired by her to become an actress, but was later disappointed in Kana (who, on the other hand, disliked that Akane became too close to Aqua). With this new novel, we will see how were their lives before the manga and how their relationship will evolve after the ending.
Fan reaction to the manga ending
Oshi no Ko‘s boldness to portray the bad side of the idol and acting industries got fans really into the story. However, a lot of people were outraged or disappointed with how the series ended, feeling the finale was rushed. They also had thought Aqua would give up on trying to get revenge.
However, Aka Akasaka, the author, has already stated that the story ended how he imagined it to end. Rushed or not, it’s the ending he envisioned. Akasaka also wrote Kaguya-sama: Love is War, whose ending also didn’t satisfy fans. Maybe he just likes to make unexpected endings.
