Director Greta Gerwig will be taking fans back through the wardrobe in a new Netflix adaptation of the beloved movie, The Chronicles of Narnia, which has now revealed its filming date by producer Amy Pascal. Due to Gerwig’s incredible success with movies like Barbie and Little Women, the award-winning screenwriter will be steering the ship on two The Chronicles of Narnia movies for Netflix, with Pascal coming on as a producer. Although there are seven Narnia novels in total, it is rumored that Gerwig might be adapting the sixth book published in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise called The Magician’s Nephew rather than the more well-known story of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Penned by the legendary author C.S. Lewis in the 1950s, The Chronicles of Narnia‘s fantasy setting tells the story of the fictional realm of Narnia, a world filled with magic, mythical beasts, and talking animals, while also telling the tale of various children who unravel its many narratives and mysteries as they teleport through a magical wardrobe and experience its spellbinding world. After years of speculation and anticipation, Narnia fans finally have a solid timeline as to when Netflix’s adaptation of the loved portal fantasy will start shooting, as well as a surprising tease from Pascal about what direction The Chronicles of Narnia will be going.

Netflix’s Narnia Adaptation Teases “Rock & Roll” Direction From Producer

Speaking with Deadline, producer Amy Pascal slightly shocked the Narnia fanbase when asked about Gerwig’s upcoming movie. Pascal, who started her own production company, Pascal Pictures, which made its debut with the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, teased that The Chronicles of Narnia adaptationwill be “a very new take on Naria. It’s all about rock and roll.” Pascal didn’t elaborate on this further, but her statement is certainly a little confusing. However, since Gerwig has previously put her own unique spin on movies like Barbie, it surely sounds like fans will be in for an interesting adventure. Pascal said that she has “never seen anyone like Gerwig”, hinting at the director’s ability to hone in on the importance of a significant story and defy stereotypes, and also added that filming for the adaptation will begin in July 2025.

The news of Netflix teaming up with The C.S. Lewis Company landed all the way back in October 2018 in what the streaming company called a “multi-year deal”, which means that it plans to have multiple film and series projects on the hot plate, all based on the books of Narnia. In 2019, Netflix also announced that Matthew Aldrich, a screenwriter known for his work on the Pixar movies Coco and Lightyear, will join the team in overseeing the development and creative live-action adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series.

According to The Times, filming for The Chronicles of Narnia adaptation will take place at Shepperton Studios in England, which has been home to a host of popular TV and movie projects like Harry Potter and Netflix’s The Sandman. As of now, there isn’t a confirmed release window for the Narnia movie, but hopefully, it shouldn’t be any later than 2027.
