Edge of Tomorrow Star Talks Potential Sequel

Edge of Tomorrow Star Talks Potential Sequel

Key Takeaways

  • Emily Blunt is open to an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, especially if it can surpass the original.
  • The physically taxing stunts in the first movie may impact her decision to return for a sequel.
  • Blunt is obviously not opposed to sequels, particularly in the sci-fi genre, in movies like A Quiet Place 2

One of the better sci-fi movies of the last decade has long had fans wishing it would get a sequel. However, up until now, there hasn’t really been much interest in an Edge of Tomorrow 2 from either Tom Cruise or Emily Blunt. However, things might be changing, at least a little.

Edge of Tomorrow was a movie that centered on a race of aliens that were dubbed Mimics that crash landed on earth riding meteors that surfaced in Europe and soon started to take over the entire globe. The aliens are discovered by Major William Cage (Cruise) and Rita Vrataski (Blunt) as having the ability to time travel. The aliens have in essence been going back in time after every battle and fixing what didn’t work for them before. Cage and Vrataski get bled on by special mimics and soon gain the ability to time travel themselves, when they die. Eventually, Vrataski loses the ability, but Cage keeps his ability, and the humans are able to kill the leader of the hive-mind aliens, saving the planet.

Emily Blunt Could Be Open To Edge Of Tomorrow Sequel

Speaking to Deadline in a recent interview, Blunt was asked whether or not she’d every be open to an Edge of Tomorrow sequel and while she’s shot that idea down in the past she was considerably more open to it this time around.

“You know, I think we’re always kind of throwing ideas around, and I see Doug a lot,” Blunt responded, talking about Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. “I love him, and you know, I always get a little gun-shy of sequels, but I think if we can beat it, or we can at least match it, because I don’t know how Doug Liman got so much mileage out of a repeating day.”

Blunt went on to say that the original Edge of Tomorrow was quite physically taxing as both she and Cruise were involved in quite a few demanding stunts as they portrayed soldiers who were up close and personal in the battle against the Mimics using a kind of exoskeleton battlesuit. However, she added that if her body could take it, she might just be open to it. “I mean, obviously, it would depend on … Could my back take it anymore? That’s the thing. That’s my question. Two children later, I’m like … But we’ll see.”

While Blunt has said that she doesn’t always love sequels, she’s clearly not completely against them, especially, oddly enough if she’s appearing in Alien invasion, end of the world scenario science fiction. She’s already appeared in A Quiet Place 2 and is expected to star in another installment of the ongoing series that features aliens who crash land on the planet riding asteroids. It appears that if Liman does come up with another way to make Edge of Tomorrow 2 worth making, she might be open to starring in the sequel.
