Best Games Set In The League Of Legends Universe

For almost a decade, League of Legends was Riot Games’ only release, but in recent years the League of Legends universe has significantly expanded with games set in Runeterra coming out left, right, and center, as well as the critically acclaimed Netflix series, Arcane.

Not only have Riot themselves released new games, but they have also partnered up with other developers to publish A League of Legends Story games under the Riot Forge publishing label. Thankfully for fans of League, this is only just the start with a fighting game and an MMO in the works, among other projects.

Updated December 7, 2024 by Joe Grantham:While the Riot Forge project was unfortunately shut down in early 2024, fans of the League of Legends universe still have new games to look forward to with the release of 2XKO, a fighting game, hopefully arriving in 2025 and featuring many fan-favorite champions. Riot also just announced that they will be making a physical card trading game, and there is always the MMO to look forward to, although it will likely be many years before it sees the light of day.

Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story is a fast-paced rhythm runner game that features explosives specialist Ziggs as the main character. Compared with other League of Legends stories, which feature darker storylines, Hextech Mayhem is all about fun and arcade-style music.

While this game is perfect for those who both enjoy the genre and have a deep connection with the world of League of Legends, Hextech Mayhem, unfortunately, failed to make a splash.

9 Bandle Tale: A League Of Legends Story

A Whimsical Crafting RPG Featuring Yordles

Bandle City is easily the most whimsical region within the League of Legends universe, and it is where loveable yordles come from. In Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story, players must try to reconnect the portals that keep Bandle City united. To do so, players must hone their magical knitting skills, as the game is primarily a crafting RPG.

The game is incredibly cozy, both in terms of aesthetics and sound design, but players looking for a game to help them relax should be warned that the crafting can get quite complicated. There is a story, however, and players will meet a handful of their favorite yordles from League such as Tristana and Rumble.

8 Song Of Nunu: A League Of Legends Story

A Cozy Winter Adventure About Friendship

Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is the whimsical adventure of two best friends, a boy called Nunu and his pet yeti, Willump. The game is by far one of the most beautiful out of all the games set in Runeterra and truly encapsulates the cozy winter game vibe it was aiming for, taking place in the frozen depths of Freljord.

The game’s charming music score has been heavily praised, and players also enjoyed the story, which while short, hits the balance perfectly in terms of depth for a brief, light-hearted adventure. The combat and general gameplay in Song of Nunu, however, can get a little boring, although anyone who enjoys a good old snowball fight likely won’t run into this problem. The game’s final boss fight was another shining light.

7 The Mageseeker: A League Of Legends Story

An Action RPG With Sylas As The Main Character

The Mageseeker is an action RPG that follows Sylas in the events following his escape from captivity. Wielding the power of the chains that once contained him, players must command the magic that surrounds them and eventually raise a rebellion that aims to bring down the Mageseekers and return justice to Demacia.

Other than adding many new things to the League of Legends lore, The Mageseeker has a solid story and gameplay, with stealing enemies’ spells being the most fun element. However, the game doesn’t really do anything new and can get repetitive after a while.

6 Convergence: A League Of Legends Story

An Action Platformer Featuring Ekko & The Ability To Turn Back Time

Out of all the League champions to appear in Arcane, Ekko is certainly one of the most popular, and it is no surprise that the boy who shattered time has gotten his own game. Convergence is a 2D platformer with a twist, as Ekko can travel through both time and space, allowing players to turn back the clocks and learn from their mistakes.

While the main emphasis is certainly on the fun and engaging gameplay, the story set in Zaun is nonetheless captivating. One of the few downsides to Convergence is that it is rather short and leaves players hoping for expansions or even a sequel.

An Auto Battler Featuring League Of Legends Champions & Skins

Teamfight Tactics was the second game to be released in the League of Legends universe and is the premiere auto battler on the market. Players amass an army of League champions and deploy them on a chess-like board to face off against other players.

Managing an economy and finding the best links between champions to build the best comps is absolutely key to finding success in Teamfight Tactics. One of the best things about TFT is that it operates on a Set system, meaning that every so often the game completely changes, gaining a new roster of champions based on a particular theme.

4 Ruined King: A League Of Legends Story

A Turn Based RPG Set In Bilgewater & The Summer Isles

Ruined King was the first A League of Legends Story to drop and arguably remains the best. It is a turn-based RPG game that allows players to explore Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles with a ragtag team of characters who will be familiar to anybody who plays League.

The game has been praised across the board for its story, aesthetic, and soundtrack, but most importantly the gameplay hits all the right notes, with a lane system that mirrors LoL and encourages finding the right combinations between champions. The boss fights are also great, but if players simply want to experience the story, any fights can be skipped.

A Free-To-Play Digital Card Game Great For Fans Of The Lore

Legends of Runeterra is a digital collectible card game that features many champions from League of Legends as well as many other characters both old and new from the world of Runeterra. Unlike other popular card games, Legends of Runeterra is extremely favorable to players who don’t want to spend any money on cards and has been heavily praised for its gameplay balance.

Likely the first thing that new players will notice about the game though, is just how beautiful it is, from the menus and playing boards to the cards themselves.

2 League Of Legends: Wild Rift

The Mobile Version Of League Of Legends

League of Legends: Wild Rift is the mobile version of the popular MOBA and while it shares many similarities, Wild Rift is very much its own game with plenty of differences from the PC version. In many ways, it is a streamlined version of League that still manages to capture the essence and depth of the original.

Not all champions are currently available and many of them work in slightly different ways to accommodate the change in controls. As the game was made from the ground up more recently, some aspects of the game look even better than they do on the PC version.

The free-to-play MOBA’s immense popularity as both a game and an esport is in large part thanks to the depth of the game and its incredible roster of champions.

With over 160 playable champions there is something for everyone and cases can be made for nearly every champion as to why they are the most fun champion to play in League of Legends.
