Days ahead of its official launch, the Rotten Tomatoes score for James Gunn’s first official entry into the DCU has been released. As of today’s writing, critics absolutely love Creature Commandos, and the HBO Max series is certified fresh.
Creature Commandos is the first peek into Gunn’s DCU, which will connect animated shows to live-action movies and television programs and back again. This animated program also offers up the blueprint for a new version of The Suicide Squad, in which Rick Flagg Sr. (played by Frank Grillo, who will reprise the character in multiple DCU projects) leads a band of literal monsters as they fight crime in unconventional ways. The streaming series is much anticipated precisely because it lays the groundwork for everything that comes after it.

Creature Commandos Kicks Off DCU With 94% On Rotten Tomatoes
While the score could still change, especially as Creature Commandos doesn’t debut until December 5, the critics’ ratings for the show so far have been overwhelmingly positive. As of now, it boasts a 94% rating with 18 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Because the program isn’t out for the public yet and this rating is based on critics who got screeners ahead of time, there aren’t any audience scores just yet.
Just where the score stays by the time more critics and the audience get ahold of Creature Commandos will be interesting to watch considering that that show started out at 100% after its first 10 reviews and has been heading down a bit since then.
The Certified Fresh rating for Creature Commandos can definitely be seen as yet another feather in the cap of Gunn who, while having an up-and-down career when it comes to his projects overall, seems to have a real knack for highly rated superhero movies and television shows. When looking at the MCU and the DCU, Gunn doesn’t have a single project that’s scored lower than 82% as either a director, screenwriter or producer. That’s just one of the reasons fans of DC Comics were more than a little excited about Gunn taking over the DCU and charting a new path. So far even the shows and movies that aren’t officially part of the new DCU like The Batman and The Penguin, are scoring ridiculously high on Rotten Tomatoes and other critic sites.
Creature Commandos is the first installment in Gunn’s next long-term project, which is making the DCU a real competitor on streaming and in movie theaters for the MCU. The new Superman movie will follow this animated show in the summer of 2025 and then August of 2025 with Peacemaker Season 2. Grillo’s Rick Flagg Sr. will appear in all three projects and the actor has said his character will be similar to the MCU’s Nick Fury. Other characters in this first show are also expected to make appearances in others, though so far, it hasn’t been confirmed how many or in what format they’ll continue appearing.
Creature Commandos is set to debut on HBO Max on December 5.
